He was born in Huesca and became a deacon of the church of Saragossa (Zaragoza). He was tortured to death in Valencia, in the persecution of Diocletian. After his death, his cult spread rapidly through the Roman Empire.

Meditation
Jesus goes about His ministry in a radical manner, teaching, welcoming and attending to the crowds that wanted to see, hear, and touch Him. For Him, going about His Father’s business was His delight (cf. Luke 2:49; Jn 4:34). On the other hand, you have His family who fear for His life and welfare, having abandoned His foster father’s occupation, He sets himself up against the Jewish authorities given the content of His teachings and the crowds that flock to Him. Things have gone so bad that he cannot even find time to eat. They are convinced he is out of His mind. When consumed by the zeal to work for God, we risk being misunderstood. May faith and determination lead us on.

vierge et martyre, mémoire
A Rome, au début du 4e siècle, une jeune fille de douze ans affronte sans crainte la mort, plutôt que de renier le Christ qu’elle aime par-dessus tout. Forte de la force même de Dieu, cette enfant résiste aux menaces, aux tortures, et réussit à préserver sa virginité. Telle fut Agnès, dont le nom, d’origine grecque, signifie ‘’la pure’’. Mais ‘’Agnès’’ évoque aussi ‘’agneau’’ : dans sa martyre, le Christ, Agneau de Dieu, continuait à triompher du mal par son sang répandu.

Que toute la terre se prosterne devant toi: Seigneur, qu’elle chante pour toi, qu’elle chante à la gloire de ton nom, Dieu très-haut.

1ère lecture : 1 S 24,3-21
Saül prit trois mille hommes, choisis dans tout Israël, et partit à la recherche de David et de ses gens en face du Rocher des Bouquetins. Il arriva aux parcs à moutons qui sont en bordure de la route ; il y a là une grotte, où Saül entra pour se soulager. Or, David et ses hommes se trouvaient au fond de la grotte. Les hommes de David lui dirent : « Voici le jour dont le Seigneur t’a dit : “Je livrerai ton ennemi entre tes mains, tu en feras ce que tu voudras.” » David vint couper furtivement le pan du manteau de Saül. Alors le coeur lui battit d’avoir coupé le pan du manteau de Saül. Il dit à ses hommes : « Que le Seigneur me préserve de faire une chose pareille à mon maître, qui a reçu l’onction du Seigneur : porter la main sur lui, qui est le messie du Seigneur. » Par ses paroles, David retint ses hommes. Il leur interdit de se jeter sur Saül. Alors Saül quitta la grotte et continua sa route. David se leva, sortit de la grotte, et lui cria : « Mon seigneur le roi ! » Saül regarda derrière lui. David s’inclina jusqu’à terre et se prosterna, puis il lui cria : « Pourquoi écoutes-tu les gens qui te disent : “David te veut du mal” ? Aujourd’hui même, tes yeux ont vu comment le Seigneur t’avait livré entre mes mains dans la grotte ; pourtant, j’ai refusé de te tuer, je t’ai épargné et j’ai dit : “Je ne porterai pas la main sur mon seigneur le roi qui a reçu l’onction du Seigneur.” Regarde, père, regarde donc : voici dans ma main le pan de ton manteau. Puisque j’ai pu le couper, et que pourtant je ne t’ai pas tué, reconnais qu’il n’y a en moi ni méchanceté ni révolte. Je n’ai pas commis de faute contre toi, alors que toi, tu traques ma vie pour me l’enlever. C’est le Seigneur qui sera juge entre toi et moi, c’est le Seigneur qui me vengera de toi, mais ma main ne te touchera pas ! Comme dit le vieux proverbe : “Des méchants sort la méchanceté.” C’est pourquoi ma main ne te touchera pas. Après qui donc le roi d’Israël s’est-il mis en campagne ? Après qui cours-tu donc ? Après un chien crevé, après une puce ? Que le Seigneur soit notre arbitre, qu’il juge entre toi et moi, qu’il examine et défende ma cause, et qu’il me rende justice, en me délivrant de ta main ! » Lorsque David eut fini de parler, Saül s’écria : « Est-ce bien ta voix que j’entends, mon fils David ? » Et Saül se mit à crier et à pleurer. Puis il dit à David : « Toi, tu es juste, et plus que moi : car toi, tu m’as fait du bien, et moi, je t’ai fait du mal. Aujourd’hui tu as montré toute ta bonté envers moi : le Seigneur m’avait livré entre tes mains, et tu ne m’as pas tué ! Quand un homme surprend son ennemi, va-t-il le laisser partir tranquillement ? Que le Seigneur te récompense pour le bien que tu m’as fait aujourd’hui. Je sais maintenant que tu régneras certainement, et que la royauté d’Israël tiendra bon en ta main.

En ce temps-là, Jésus gravit la montagne, et il appela ceux qu’il voulait. Ils vinrent auprès de lui, et il en institua douze pour qu’ils soient avec lui et pour les envoyer proclamer la Bonne Nouvelle avec le pouvoir d’expulser les démons. Donc, il établit les Douze: Pierre – c’est le nom qu’il donna à Simon –, Jacques, fils de Zébédée, et Jean, le frère de Jacques – il leur donna le nom de «Boanerguès», c’est-à-dire: «Fils du tonnerre» – André, Philippe, Barthélemy, Matthieu, Thomas, Jacques, fils d’Alphée, Thaddée, Simon le Zélote, et Judas Iscariote, celui-là même qui le livra.

Seigneur, tu as donné à la bienheureuse Agnès d’être comptée parmi les saintes du ciel, au double titre de vierge et de martyre ; par la force de cette communion, fais-nous sortir vainqueurs de toute épreuve pour obtenir un jour la gloire du Royaume. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Jésus s’en va dans la montagne, un lieu à l’écart, pour une étape importante de sa vie et de sa mission : l’appel de ses collaborateurs. C’est une nouvelle genèse, avec un échantillon d’humanité, des braves gens comme vous et moi : Pierre, Jacques, Jean… Il les institue, les investit d’une mission, en nommant, et même renommant certains pour l’occasion. Jésus nomme ses collaborateurs comme Adam avait nommé les créatures du Paradis. L’aventure peut commencer. C’est important de savoir qui on est, et qui nous envoie, pour être ambassadeur ! Un nom se reçoit toujours d’un autre. Il est le gage d’une confiance et une ouverture sur un avenir. Jésus veut « qu’ils soient avec lui ». Dans l’Evangile de Jean il demandera même à Dieu : « qu’ils soient en nous ». Projet de communion pour toute l’humanité, qu’il commence humblement avec Pierre, Jacques, Jean… Que nos espérances les plus folles pour le monde puissent trouver un début de réalisation avec… Pierre, Jacques, Jean…

St. Agnes

As with so many of the early Roman martyrs, very little is now known about Agnes’ life. Agnes was filled with the love of God from an early age, vowed herself to celibacy, and when the opportunity of martyrdom arose, she did not hide away but stepped forward and took it.
Entrance Antiphon
Behold, now she follows the Lamb who was crucified for us, powerful in virginity, modesty her offering, a sacrifice on the altar of chastity.
Collect
Almighty ever-living God, who choose what is weak in the world to confound the strong, mercifully grant, that we, who celebrate the heavenly birthday of your Martyr Saint Agnes, may follow her constancy in the faith. First reading : 1 Samuel 24:3-21
Saul took three thousand men chosen from the whole of Israel and went in search of David and his men east of the Rocks of the Wild Goats. He came to the sheepfolds along the route where there was a cave, and went in to cover his feet. Now David and his men were sitting in the recesses of the cave; David’s men said to him, ‘Today is the day of which the Lord said to you, “I will deliver your enemy into your power, do what you like with him.”’ David stood up and, unobserved, cut off the border of Saul’s cloak. Afterwards David reproached himself for having cut off the border of Saul’s cloak. He said to his men, ‘The Lord preserve me from doing such a thing to my lord and raising my hand against him, for he is the anointed of the Lord.’ David gave his men strict instructions, forbidding them to attack Saul. Saul then left the cave and went on his way. After this, David too left the cave and called after Saul, ‘My lord king!’ Saul looked behind him and David bowed to the ground and did homage. Meditation
Jesus goes up the hill (a place of encounter), from there calls those he wanted. He called them to be his companions and to be sent out. As companions in His salvific work, they were first to be with Him, share His life and experience and live the experience of community. Then he would later send them out to do the things He did; preaching, dislodging the evil powers and constructing the reign of God. Jesus calls us by name (cf. Is 43:1) to an intimate relationship with Him and with others in the community of believers. Our testimony to Christ and His Gospel is largely connected with the extent of our intimacy with Christ and disposition to live with others as brothers and sisters.

t. Fabien, pape et martyr
L’Église ancienne connaissait des ascensions brusques du laïcat à un ordre élevé de la hiérarchie : ce fut le cas de Fabien qui, de laïc, fut élu pape en 236. A la charge de successeur de Pierre il ajouta l’honneur du martyre : il témoigna victorieusement pour le Christ lors de la persécution de Dèce en 250.

Les femmes dansaient en se renvoyant ce refrain: «Saül a tué ses milliers, et David, ses dizaines de milliers.» Saül le prit très mal et fut très irrité. Il disait: «À David on attribue les dizaines de milliers, et à moi les milliers ; il ne lui manque plus que la royauté!» Depuis ce jour-là, Saül regardait David avec méfiance. Saül dit à son fils Jonathan et à tous ses serviteurs son intention de faire mourir David. Mais Jonathan, le fils de Saül, aimait beaucoup David et il alla le prévenir: «Mon père Saül cherche à te faire mourir. Demain matin, sois sur tes gardes, mets-toi à l’abri, dissimule-toi. Moi, je sortirai et je me tiendrai à côté de mon père dans le champ où tu seras. Je parlerai de toi à mon père, je verrai ce qu’il en est et je te le ferai savoir.» Jonathan fit à son père Saül l’éloge de David; il dit: «Que le roi ne commette pas de faute contre son serviteur David, car lui n’a commis aucune faute envers toi. Au contraire, ses exploits sont une très bonne chose pour toi. Il a risqué sa vie, il a frappé à mort Goliath le Philistin, et le Seigneur a donné une grande victoire à tout Israël : tu l’as vu et tu en as été heureux. Pourquoi donc commettre une faute contre la vie d’un innocent, en faisant mourir David sans motif?» Saül écouta Jonathan et fit ce serment: «Par le Seigneur vivant, il ne sera pas mis à mort!» Alors Jonathan appela David et lui répéta tout ce que le roi avait dit. Puis il le conduisit à Saül, et David reprit sa place comme avant.

R/ Sur Dieu, je prends appui: plus rien ne me fait peur.

En ce temps-là, Jésus se retira avec ses disciples près de la mer, et une grande multitude de gens, venus de la Galilée, le suivirent. De Judée, de Jérusalem, d’Idumée, de Transjordanie, et de la région de Tyr et de Sidon vinrent aussi à lui une multitude de gens qui avaient entendu parler de ce qu’il faisait. Il dit à ses disciples de tenir une barque à sa disposition pour que la foule ne l’écrase pas. Car il avait fait beaucoup de guérisons, si bien que tous ceux qui souffraient de quelque mal se précipitaient sur lui pour le toucher. Et lorsque les esprits impurs le voyaient, ils se jetaient à ses pieds et criaient: «Toi, tu es le Fils de Dieu!» Mais il leur défendait vivement de le faire connaître.

Seigneur, accorde-nous la grâce de vraiment participer à cette eucharistie; Car chaque fois qu’est célébré ce sacrifice en mémorial, c’est l’ouvre de notre Rédemption qui s’accomplit. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Hier, les Pharisiens tenaient conseil avec les Hérodiens pour faire périr Jésus, et aujourd’hui, le voilà entouré d’une foule venue de loin pour se faire guérir. Quel contraste ! Quel homme menacé de mort agirait ainsi ? Un guérisseur, aussi puissant soit-il, aurait cessé toute activité pour protéger sa propre vie. Mais pour le moment, personne autour de lui ne se pose cette question. La foule suit Jésus, non parce qu’elle a compris qui il était, mais parce qu’elle a été guérie et rassasiée. Jésus le sait, c’est pourquoi il rabroue les esprits impurs quand ils crient « Tu es le Fils de Dieu ». Leur connaissance n’est qu’extérieure. Il faut attendre que Jésus se manifeste sur la croix pour qu’un centurion puisse dire à la fin de l’évangile : « Vraiment, cet homme était Fils de Dieu ! »

First reading : Philippians 2:1-11
If our life in Christ means anything to you, if love can persuade at all, or the Spirit that we have in common, or any tenderness and sympathy, then be united in your convictions and united in your love, with a common purpose and a common mind. That is the one thing which would make me completely happy. There must be no competition among you, no conceit; but everybody is to be self-effacing. Always consider the other person to be better than yourself, so that nobody thinks of his own interests first but everybody thinks of other people’s interests instead. In your minds you must be the same as Christ Jesus: His state was divine, yet he did not cling to his equality with God but emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave, and became as men are; and being as all men are, he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross. Gospel : Matthew 13:44-46
Jesus said to the crowds: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field which someone has found; he hides it again, goes off happy, sells everything he owns and buys the field. ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls; when he finds one of great value he goes and sells everything he owns and buys it.’
Prayer over the Offerings
Receive, O Lord, we pray, the offerings made for the salvation of your people, so that through the intercession of blessed Cyprian Michael we may flee the enticements of sin and draw near to the company of heaven. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
Jesus compares the kingdom of God to a treasure and pearl of great value either stumbled on or found by a seeker. Whether one finds it without intending or finds it because he has been searching for it, what is important is that the person who finds it recognises that it is priceless and is ready to give up every other thing to acquire it. In Christ we encounter the reign of God. Do we realise how blessed we are to know Christ? Do we value the fact that He has transferred us into His kingdom (cf. Col 1:13)? Are we willing to sacrifice every other thing for the teachings of Christ and the values of the kingdom?
