In 1615, he became a member of the Order of Saint Benedict and was ordained as a priest in 1617. He was arrested several times during his travels before he eventually suffered a martyr’s death in 1671.

Since we are also to judge angels, it follows that we can judge matters of everyday life; but when you have had cases of that kind, the people you appointed to try them were not even respected in the Church. You should be ashamed: is there really not one reliable man among you to settle differences between brothers and so one brother brings a court case against another in front of unbelievers? It is bad enough for you to have lawsuits at all against one another: oughtn’t you to let yourselves be wronged, and let yourselves be cheated? But you are doing the wronging and the cheating, and to your own brothers. You know perfectly well that people who do wrong will not inherit the kingdom of God: people of immoral lives, idolaters, adulterers, catamites, sodomites, thieves, usurers, drunkards, slanderers and swindlers will never inherit the kingdom of God. These are the sort of people some of you were once, but now you have been washed clean, and sanctified, and justified through the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and through the Spirit of our God.

Meditation There was a reason why Jesus called the twelve disciples to be His apostles; to help Him spread the good news about God. They were His eyes and ears; they were His collaborators in His mission. Before choosing these twelve men, Jesus went up a mountain to spend the entire night in communion with God. It was a serious decision he had to make and he needed to draw on his Father’s wisdom. We may be asking ourselves about the choices he made: Peter denied he ever knew Jesus; James and John: Jesus nicknamed them «sons of thunder» who wanted to call down fire to incinerate a whole town. And there was a doubting Thomas; Nathanael who figured nothing good could ever come out of Nazareth and Judas who became the traitor. The amazing thing in all this is that, with one notable exception, all the men Jesus chose, repented, changed their lifestyles, proclaimed the risen Lord, and testified to the Lord with their blood. We may also ask ourselves why he chose Judas. No one knows God’s mind but what we know for sure is that God’s grace has been given to all of us. They accepted the grace, but ultimately only eleven lived faithful to it. Each of the eleven chose to be faithful, just as Judas chose to be unfaithful. The mystery is rooted in the human will to collaborate in God’s mission

Frères, lorsque l’un d’entre vous a un désaccord avec un autre, comment ose-t-il aller en procès devant des juges païens plutôt que devant les fidèles ? Ne savez-vous pas que les fidèles jugeront le monde ? Et si c’est vous qui devez juger le monde, seriez-vous indignes de juger des affaires de moindre importance ? Ne savez-vous pas que nous jugerons des anges ? À plus forte raison les affaires de cette vie ! Et quand vous avez de telles affaires, vous prenez comme juges des gens qui n’ont pas d’autorité dans l’Église ! Je vous le dis à votre honte. N’y aurait-il parmi vous aucun homme assez sage pour servir d’arbitre entre ses frères ? Pourtant, un frère est en procès avec son frère, et cela devant des gens qui ne sont pas croyants ! C’est déjà un échec pour vous d’avoir des litiges entre vous. Pourquoi ne pas plutôt supporter l’injustice ? Pourquoi ne pas plutôt vous laisser dépouiller ? Au contraire, c’est vous qui commettez l’injustice et qui dépouillez les autres, et cela, vous le faites à des frères ! Ne savez- vous pas que ceux qui commettent l’injustice ne recevront pas le royaume de Dieu en héritage ? Ne vous y trompez pas: ni les débauchés, les idolâtres, les adultères, ni les dépravés et les sodomites, ni les voleurs et les profiteurs, ni les ivrognes, les diffamateurs et les escrocs, aucun de ceux-là ne recevra le royaume de Dieu en héritage. Voilà ce qu’étaient certains d’entre vous. Mais vous avez été lavés, vous avez été sanctifiés, vous êtes devenus des justes, au nom du Seigneur Jésus Christ et par l’Esprit de notre Dieu.

Méditation Pendant une nuit de prière, Jésus a placé sous le regard de son Père chacun de ceux qu’il devait choisir. Alain fut un grand prédicateur dominicain et l’un des premiers disciples de saint Dominique. C’est lui qui coordonna le chapelet et l’enrichit en y ajoutant les méditations, ainsi que la vie de Jésus et Marie. Il le baptisa chapelet du Rosaire parce qu’il ressemblait à un bouquet de roses qu’on dépose aux pieds de la Vierge.

Et, malgré cela, vous êtes gonflés d’orgueil au lieu d’en pleurer et de chasser de votre communauté celui qui commet cet acte. Quant à moi, qui suis absent de corps mais présent d’esprit, j’ai déjà jugé, comme si j’étais présent, l’homme qui agit de la sorte : au nom du Seigneur Jésus, lors d’une réunion où je serai spirituellement avec vous, dans la puissance de notre Seigneur Jésus, il faut livrer cet individu au pouvoir de Satan, pour la perdition de son être de chair ; ainsi, son esprit pourra être sauvé au jour du Seigneur. Vraiment, vous n’avez pas de quoi être fiers : ne savez-vous pas qu’un peu de levain suffit pour que fermente toute la pâte ? Purifiez-vous donc des vieux ferments, et vous serez une pâte nouvelle, vous qui êtes le pain de la Pâque, celui qui n’a pas fermenté. Car notre agneau pascal a été immolé : c’est le Christ. Ainsi, célébrons la Fête, non pas avec de vieux ferments, non pas avec ceux de la perversité et du vice, mais avec du pain non fermenté, celui de la droiture et de la vérité.

Un jour de sabbat, Jésus était entré dans la synagogue et enseignait. Il y avait là un homme dont la main droite était desséchée. Les scribes et les pharisiens observaient Jésus pour voir s’il ferait une guérison le jour du sabbat ; ils auraient ainsi un motif pour l’accuser. Mais lui connaissait leurs raisonnements, et il dit à l’homme qui avait la main desséchée : « Lève-toi, et tiens-toi debout, là au milieu. » L’homme se dressa et se tint debout. Jésus leur dit : « Je vous le demande : Est-il permis, le jour du sabbat, de faire le bien ou de faire le mal ? de sauver une vie ou de la perdre ? » Alors, promenant son regard sur eux tous, il dit à l’homme : « Étends la main. » Il le fit, et sa main redevint normale. Quant à eux, ils furent remplis de fureur et ils discutaient entre eux sur ce qu’ils feraient à Jésus.

Jésus vient guérir non seulement l’homme malade dans son corps physique mais aussi l’homme paralysé intérieurement, dans un rigorisme idéologique qui fait de la loi et du respect du repos légal un obstacle à la charité et à l’amour pour celui qui a besoin d’un coup de main. Il est remarquable que la Parole de Jésus suffit pour soigner la main desséchée, que l’homme paralysé présente en public tandis que le cœur des scrutateurs rigoristes ne s’est pas ouvert malgré «le regard que Jésus balade sur eux tous.

Meditation
Doing good is always in season there is no exception on doing good and Jesus proves this point by healing a man’s withered hand. Doing good also encompasses anyone else be it friends, strangers or even enemies. We must do good in and out of season. Jesus cured the man with a withered hand notwithstanding the presence of the Pharisees and the scribes who were keenly watching Him. He laid more emphasis on the need to help the sick man rather than be afraid, a real sure of courage. Let us ask ourselves this question: have you forgone helping someone in need just because you are afraid that you might offend someone who is very influential? It is not really easy as this is easier said than done. Jesus did not fear even when he faced threats of physical and verbal abuse.
