SAINT Vincent de Paul
He was born in Aquitaine and became a priest. He devoted his whole life to the service of the poor. He founded a congregation of priests for missionary work and with St Louise de Marillac, the Sisters of Charity.
Entrance Antiphon: Lk 4: 18
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me and sent me to preach the good news to the poor, to heal the broken-hearted.

O God, who for the relief of the poor and the formation of the clergy endowed the Priest Saint Vincent de Paul with apostolic virtues, grant, we pray, that, afire with that same spirit, we may love what he loved and put into practice what he taught. Gospel: Luke 9:1-6

Whatever house you enter, stay there; and when you leave, let it be from there. As for those who do not welcome you, when you leave their town shake the dust from your feet as a sign to them.” So they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the Good News and healing everywhere.

Prayer after Communion
Renewed by this heavenly Sacrament, O Lord, we implore, that just as we are prompted by Saint Vincent’s example to imitate your Son in his preaching of the Gospel to the poor, so, too, we may be sustained by his prayers. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Luke places the 12 apostles at the forefront of this passage. They are presented as those who participate fully and share in the Mission of Christ. They are no longer simple followers, but are given the task of doing what Jesus does; exercising authority over unclean spirits, curing diseases and proclaiming the kingdom of God. Proclaiming the kingdom of God and healing occupied a great place in their mission. Our focus as followers of Christ should be centred on the proclamation of the Good News, rather than on the distractions of our days. What are the things that obstruct me from being focused on the spreading of the Good News?

SAINT Vincent de Paul, Prêtre
Petit berger landais, d’une intelligence vive, ‘’Monsieur Vincent’’ (1581-1660) devint prêtre et prit conscience des misères de son temps. Il voulut y porter remède par des œuvres d’assistance, avec l’aide des Dames de Charité, et par la fondation de deux congrégations : les Prêtres de la Mission devaient diriger les séminaires et évangéliser les campagnes, les Filles de la Charité devaient soigner les pauvres et les enfants abandonnés. Son action était fécondée par la prière.

1ère lecture : Esdras 9, 5-9
Moi, Esdras, à l’heure de l’offrande du soir, je me relevai de ma prostration ; le vêtement et le manteau déchirés, je tombai à genoux ;les mains tendues vers le Seigneur mon Dieu, je dis :« Mon Dieu, j’ai trop de honte et de confusion pour lever mon visage vers toi, mon Dieu. Nos fautes sans nombre nous submergent, nos offenses se sont amoncelées jusqu’au ciel. Évangile : Lc 9, 1-6
En ce temps-là, Jésus rassembla les Douze ; il leur donna pouvoir et autorité sur tous les démons, et de même pour faire des guérisons ; il les envoya proclamer le règne de Dieu et guérir les malades. Il leur dit : « Ne prenez rien pour la route, ni bâton, ni sac, ni pain, ni argent ; n’ayez pas chacun une tunique de rechange. Quand vous serez reçus dans une maison, restez-y; c’est de là que vous repartirez. Seigneur, tu donnais à Saint Vincent la force de conformer toute sa vie aux saints mystères qu’il célébrait ; fais que nous devenions nous même, par la puissance de cette Eucharistie, une offrande agréable à tes yeux. Par Jésus.

Proclamons l’amour du Seigneur, ses merveilles pour les hommes : il a rassasié ceux qui avaient faim et désaltéré ceux qui avaient soif.

Méditation
C’est la première fois que Jésus envoie les douze disciples seuls en mission. En fait, ils doivent faire exactement ce que leur Maître a eu l’habitude faire en leur présence : chasser les démons, guérir les maladies, proclamer la Bonne Nouvelle du Royaume. Pour réussir dans leur mission, Ils doivent éviter tout encombrement et faire confiance à la providence. Il est entendu que la population les soutiendra en échange des services qu’ils rendront. La même mission est confiée à chacun d’entre nous aujourd’hui, avec la nécessité de l’adapter à notre situation de vie. Nous sommes appelés, individuellement et en communauté, à proclamer l’Évangile par notre parole et par notre style de vie. Nous sommes appelés à aider à libérer nos frères et sœurs des forces du mal, des dépendances de toutes sortes qui les asservissent. Nous sommes appelés à être des sources de guérison, à vivre une vie de simplicité.

Martyrisés vers 300, près d’Alep, ces deux saints sont appelés ‘’anargyres’’ parce que, d’après la tradition, ils auraient exercé gratuitement la médecine. Une basilique à Rome leur est dédiée.

1ère Lectures : Esd 6,7-8.12b.14-20
Laissez le gouverneur de Juda et les anciens des Juifs travailler à cette Maison de Dieu : ils doivent la rebâtir sur son emplacement. Voici mes ordres concernant votre ligne de conduite envers les anciens des Juifs pour la reconstruction de cette Maison de Dieu : les dépenses de ces gens leur seront remboursées, exactement et sans interruption, sur les fonds royaux, c’est-à-dire sur l’impôt de la province. Que le Dieu qui fait résider son nom à Jérusalem renverse tout roi et tout peuple qui, transgressant cet édit, étendra la main pour détruire cette Maison de Dieu qui est à Jérusalem. Moi, Darius, j’ai donné cet ordre. Les anciens des Juifs continuèrent avec succès les travaux de construction, encouragés par la parole des prophètes Aggée et Zacharie le fils d’Iddo. Ils achevèrent la construction conformément à l’ordre du Dieu d’Israël, selon les décrets de Cyrus et de Darius. La Maison de Dieu fut achevée le troisième jour du mois nommé Adar, dans la sixième année du règne de Darius. Les fils d’Israël, les prêtres, les lévites et le reste des rapatriés célébrèrent dans la joie la dédicace de cette Maison de Dieu. Ils immolèrent, pour cette dédicace, cent taureaux, deux cents béliers, quatre cents agneaux et, en sacrifice pour le péché de tout Israël, douze boucs, d’après le nombre des tribus d’Israël. Puis ils installèrent les prêtres selon leurs classes, et les lévites selon leurs groupes, pour le service de Dieu à Jérusalem, suivant les prescriptions du livre de Moïse. Les rapatriés célébrèrent la Pâque le quatorzième jour du premier mois. Tous les prêtres et tous les lévites, sans exception, s’étaient purifiés : tous étaient purs. Ils immolèrent donc la Pâque pour tous les rapatriés, pour leurs frères les prêtres, et pour eux-mêmes.

Jérusalem, te voici dans tes murs: ville où tout ensemble ne fait qu’un ! C’est là que montent les tribus, les tribus du Seigneur,
là qu’Israël doit rendre grâce au nom du Seigneur. C’est là le siège du droit, le siège de la maison de David.
Evangile: Luc 8,19-21
La mère et les frères de Jésus vinrent le trouver, mais ils ne pouvaient pas arriver jusqu’à lui à cause de la foule. On le lui fit savoir : « Ta mère et tes frères sont là dehors, qui veulent te voir. » Il leur répondit : « Ma mère et mes frères sont ceux qui écoutent la parole de Dieu et la mettent en pratique. »

Méditation
Dieu n’a pas voulu que nous soyons seuls, mais que nous soyons avec d’autres personnes. Il nous donne des occasions de soigner nos relations avec notre famille, nos amis, nos voisins et nos collègues de travail. Pourquoi Jésus semble-t-il ignorer ses propres parents lorsqu’ils cherchent à le voir ? Jésus montre une réalité plus élevée, la parenté spirituelle, la famille de Dieu. Ceux qui suivent Jésus-Christ et qui cherchent la volonté de Dieu entrent dans une nouvelle famille, une famille de « saints » ici sur terre et au ciel. Jésus change l’ordre des relations et montre que la vraie parenté n’est pas seulement une question de chair et de sang. Notre adoption comme fils et filles de Dieu transforme toutes nos relations. L’apôtre Paul nous avertit de ne pas nouer d’amitiés avec ceux qui nous entraînent dans le péché et l’infidélité. Nous devons prier pour eux, rechercher leur bien, et chercher des moyens de témoigner de la joie de l’Évangile. La véritable amitié pour nous chrétien devrait renforcer notre amour pour Dieu et pour le prochain. Puissions-nous toujours préférer la volonté de Dieu et chercher à faire ce qui est juste dans nos relations !

SAINTS Cosmas and Damian
They are buried at Cyrrhus in Syria, where a basilica was constructed in their honour. In the fifth century their cult spread rapidly through the entire Church.

First reading: Ezra 6:7-8,12,14-20
King Darius wrote to the satrap of Transeuphrates and his colleagues: “Leave the high commissioner of Judah and the elders of the Jews to work on this Temple of God; they are to rebuild this Temple of God on its ancient site. This, I decree, is how you must assist the elders of the Jews in the reconstruction of this Temple of God: the expenses of these people are to be paid, promptly and without fail, from the royal revenue – that is, from the tribute of Transeuphrates. May the God who causes his name to live there overthrow any king or people who dares to defy this and destroy the Temple of God in Jerusalem! I, Darius, have issued this decree. Let it be obeyed to the letter!” The elders of the Jews prospered with their building, inspired by Haggai the prophet and Zechariah son of Iddo. They finished the building in accordance with the order of the God of Israel and the order of Cyrus and of Darius. This Temple was finished on the twenty-third day of the month of Adar; it was the sixth year of the reign of King Darius. The Israelites – the priests, the Levites and the remainder of the exiles – joyfully dedicated this Temple of God; for the dedication of this Temple of God they offered one hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs and, as a sacrifice for sin for the whole of Israel, twelve he-goats, corresponding to the number of the tribes of Israel. Then they installed the priests according to their orders in the service of the Temple of God in Jerusalem, as is written in the Book of Moses. The exiles celebrated the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month. The Levites, as one man, had purified themselves; all were pure, so they sacrificed the passover for all the exiles, for their brothers the priests and for themselves.

Jerusalem is built as a city strongly compact. It is there that the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord.
For Israel’s law it is, there to praise the Lord’s name. There were set the thrones of judgement of the house of David.

Meditation
When Jesus was talking to others, he was not just giving a few rules for better living. He was inviting us to accept adoption into the Divine family of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. So, these words of Jesus about his mother and his family are not a slang at Mary. They are a reminder to us of his desire that everyone belongs to His family. In our adopted life, He, even from the Cross, gave us Mary as our mother through the symbolism of Saint John when he said to him “Here is your mother” (John 19:27). Closeness to Jesus does not depend on social standing or academic achievement or affluence. It depends simply on hearing the word and doing it. The primary word of Jesus to us is that the love of his Father for us is infinite. We are to trust this word and live by it. When love leads, we all become brothers and sisters, and the world becomes a warmer place.

Meditation
Jesus wants his followers to let their light shine and be seen by others. At times it can be challenging to live by the lights we have received from him. Being laughed at and sometimes being physically persecuted for acting upon our sincerely held beliefs, are situations for which we need divine help to handle. Jesus, however, has promised to be with us and give us his unfailing help till the end of time. The purpose of lighting a lamp is to provide light for a better view. When loving others, we express our love of God. Our acts of kindness, thoughtfulness or thanks are ways by which we can be lit lamps. Jesus asks me to pay attention to how I listen to others and what I notice in them. If my prayer is full of distraction or if my mind is always racing, I might miss his grace. If I see only deficiency, I will lose everything; if I am able to recognize, appreciate and receive blessing, I can trust in God’s goodness and love.
