Pope Saint Sixtus II

Sixtus was elected Pope in 257. Twelve months later, on 6th August, as he was celebrating Mass in the catacomb of St Calixtus, he was seized by the authorities and beheaded along with four of his deacons. He was buried in the same catacomb.

And his disciples went and pleaded with him. ‘Give her what she wants,’ they said ‘because she is shouting after us.’ He said in reply, ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.’ But the woman had come up and was kneeling at his feet. ‘Lord,’ she said ‘help me.’ He replied, ‘It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house-dogs.’ She retorted, ‘Ah yes, sir; but even house-dogs can eat the scraps that fall from their master’s table.’ Then Jesus answered her, ‘Woman, you have great faith. Meditation
What sets the Canaanite woman’s faith as unique is her deep awareness about Jesus as the true Master. The Canaanite woman is not fixated on the gravity of insult owing to being referred to as a dog. Suffering had brought her to grapple with the fundamental question of existence. Her deep encounter with Jesus had made her recognise the rare privilege of being in the presence of the Master of existence. With an attitude of abundant awe and deep humility, she bravely embraces the dog tag from Jesus the Master. After all, being tormented by demons had already reduced her daughter’s life into almost nothing. She is aware that Jesus is the Master from whom everything came into being; man and dog alike. Before Jesus we are nothing. Yet he still calls and justifies us. Even when life reduces us to near dog status, he has a way of restoring us into worthiness. Being counted worthy to partake at His Eucharistic table by far surpasses the question of the size of the bread in which we are to partake.

Au lendemain de la définition par le concile d’Éphèse (431) de la maternité divine de Marie, le pape Sixte III érigea à Rome la basilique Sainte-Marie Majeure. C’est la plus ancienne des églises d’Occident dédiées à la Mère de Dieu.

Au jour de la transfiguration, l’Esprit Saint Apparut dans la nuée lumineuse, et la voix du Père se fit entendre : « Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé, en qui j’ai mis tout mon amour ; écoutez-le. »

Seigneur, dans la transfiguration de ton Christ, tu as confirmé par le témoignage de Moise et d’Élie la vérité des mystères de la foi, et tu as annoncé notre merveilleuse adoption ; accorde-nous d’écouter la voix de ton Fils bien-aimé, afin de pouvoir un jour partager avec lui son héritage. 1ère lecture : Dn 7, 9-10.13-14
La nuit, au cours d’une vision, moi, Daniel, je regardais : des trônes furent disposés, et un Vieillard prit place ; son habit était blanc comme la neige, et les cheveux de sa tête, comme de la laine immaculée ; son trône était fait de flammes de feu, avec des roues de feu ardent. Un fleuve de feu coulait, qui jaillissait devant lui. Des milliers de milliers le servaient, des myriades de myriades se tenaient devant lui. Le tribunal prit place et l’on ouvrit des livres. Je regardais, au cours des visions de la nuit, et je voyais venir, avec les nuées du ciel, comme un Fils d’homme ; il parvint jusqu’au Vieillard, et on le fit avancer devant lui. En ce temps-là, prit avec lui Pierre, Jacques et Jean, et les emmena, eux seuls, à l’écart sur une haute montagne. Et il fut transfiguré devant eux. Ses vêtements devinrent resplendissants, d’une blancheur telle que personne sur terre ne peut obtenir une blancheur pareille. Élie leur apparut avec Moïse, et tous deux s’entretenaient avec Jésus. Pierre alors prend la parole et dit à Jésus : « Rabbi, il est bon que nous soyons ici ! Dressons donc trois tentes : une pour toi, une pour Moïse, et une pour Élie. » De fait, Pierre ne savait que dire, tant leur frayeur était grande. Survint une nuée qui les couvrit de son ombre, et de la nuée une voix se fit entendre: « Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé : écoutez-le!» Soudain, regardant tout autour, ils ne virent plus que Jésus seul avec eux. Ils descendirent de la montagne, et Jésus leur ordonna de ne raconter à personne ce qu’ils avaient vu, avant que le Fils de l’homme soit ressuscité d’entre les morts. Et ils restèrent fermement attachés à cette parole, tout en se demandant entre eux ce que voulait dire: « ressusciter d’entre les morts».

Sanctifie nos offrandes, Seigneur, par le mystère de ton Fils transfiguré en gloire; et, dans le rayonnement de sa lumière, purifie-nous de la lèpre du péché. Par Jésus.

Méditation
De Jésus, trois disciples ont pu attester : en lui resplendit la gloire de Dieu. L’extraordinaire de la Transfiguration, c’est qu’un homme de notre chair et de notre sang devienne rayonnant de la lumière même de Dieu, car la lumière qui jaillit alors du corps du Christ est révélation de Dieu son Père, auquel il est, en tant que Fils, uni par un amour éternel. Cette prise de possession du corps et de l’humanité toute entière de Jésus par la gloire lumineuse de Dieu se réalisera par la Résurrection, dont la Transfiguration est l’annonce. Un tel destin a de quoi émerveiller, et l’on comprend Pierre, tenté de se figer dans cette contemplation. Mais cet évènement n’est pas un terme ; il est une étape sur le chemin qui mène à l’engagement absolu, celui de la croix.

Elijah appeared to them with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. Then Peter spoke to Jesus: ‘Rabbi,’ he said ‘it is wonderful for us to be here; so let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ He did not know what to say; they were so frightened. And a cloud came, covering them in shadow; and there came a voice from the cloud, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him.’ Then suddenly, when they looked round, they saw no one with them any more but only Jesus. As they came down from the mountain he warned them to tell no one what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. They observed the warning faithfully, though among themselves they discussed what ‘rising from the dead’ could mean.

May the heavenly nourishment we have received, O Lord, we pray, transform us into the likeness of your Son, whose radiant splendour you willed to make manifest in his glorious Transfiguration. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
Overwhelmed by the transfiguration spectacle, the three disciples sought for a perpetual extension of the transfiguration gratification. They were unaware of the deep personal sacrifices required to ‘come down’ and encounter the daily cost of adhering to God’s Laws and surrendering of the self to prophetic risks as represented by Moses and Elijah. We are living in a historical moment where people are clamouring for change without committing themselves to personal interior change. The Transfiguration experience cannot be reduced to an emotional gratification obtained from momentary spiritual encounters and external religiosity. It is rather an outcome of labourious efforts for interior transformation where ascending begins with self-emptying and ‘coming down’ from the mountain of pride. It demands for an inner disposition to listen and be disfigured into obedience by the voice of God’s Beloved Son. At the height of spiritual transfiguration, we are configured to Jesus.

The Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major

The Council of Ephesus in 431 formally proclaimed the mother of Jesus as the Mother of God, and the church (basilica) of St Mary Major on the Esquiline Hill in Rome was built shortly afterwards to celebrate her motherhood. This is the oldest church in the West that is dedicated to Our Lady.

At the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah in the fifth month of the fourth year, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, a Gibeonite, spoke as follows to Jeremiah in the Temple of the Lord in the presence of the priests and of all the people. ‘The Lord, the God of Israel, says this, “I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. In two years’ time I will bring back all the vessels of the Temple of the Lord which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon carried off from this place and took to Babylon. And I will also bring back Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles of Judah who have gone to Babylon – it is the Lord who speaks. Yes, I am going to break the yoke of the king of Babylon.”’ The prophet Jeremiah then replied to the prophet Hananiah in front of the priests and all the people there in the Temple of the Lord. ‘I hope so’ the prophet Jeremiah said. ‘May the Lord do so. May he fulfil the words that you have prophesied and bring the vessels of the Temple of the Lord and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon. Listen carefully, however, to this word that I am now going to say for you and all the people to hear: From remote times, the prophets who preceded you and me prophesied war, famine and plague for many countries and for great kingdoms; but the prophet who prophesies peace can only be recognised as one truly sent by the Lord when his word comes true.’ The prophet Hananiah then took the yoke off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it. In front of all the people Hananiah then said, ‘The Lord says this, “This is how, two years hence, I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and take it off the necks of all the nations.”’ At this, the prophet Jeremiah went away. After the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke which he had taken off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah the word of the Lord was addressed to Jeremiah, ‘Go to Hananiah and tell him this, “The Lord says this: You can break wooden yokes? Right, I will make them iron yokes instead! For the Lord Sabaoth, the God of Israel, says this: An iron yoke is what I now lay on the necks of all these nations to subject them to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. They will be subject to him; I have even given him the wild animals.”’ The prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, ‘Listen carefully, Hananiah: the Lord has not sent you; and thanks to you this people are now relying on what is false. Hence – the Lord says this, “I am going to throw you off the face of the earth: you are going to die this year since you have preached apostasy from the Lord.”’ The prophet Hananiah died the same year, in the seventh month.

When Jesus received the news of John the Baptist’s death he withdrew by boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves. But the people heard of this and, leaving the towns, went after him on foot. So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them and healed their sick. When evening came, the disciples went to him and said, ‘This is a lonely place, and the time has slipped by; so send the people away, and they can go to the villages to buy themselves some food.’ Jesus replied, ‘There is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.’ But they answered ‘All we have with us is five loaves and two fish.’ ‘Bring them here to me’ he said. He gave orders that the people were to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing. And breaking the loaves handed them to his disciples who gave them to the crowds. They all ate as much as they wanted, and they collected the scraps remaining; twelve baskets full. Those who ate numbered about five thousand men, to say nothing of women and children.

Meditation
The people were so captivated by the presence of Jesus that they forgot to carry food deep into the desert. Seeing the burden of scarcity, the disciples wanted him to dismiss the crowd. Jesus however reminded them that “there is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.” Here, the empathetic presence of Jesus seeks to restore the attitude of other-centeredness. He endeavored to break the yoke of shifting responsibility in the midst of acute scarcity and the burden of hunger. Jesus unyokes himself from the perception of seeing others as a burden to be sent away. He identifies with the people by yoking himself with their burdens. His Agape-laden eyes pierce through the people to reveal the hidden treasure that they were. Beyond their burden, Jesus sees a treasure trove worth harnessing and sharing. From the two hearts of gratitude, an abundance of bread and fish were sourced and multiplied. In the presence of Jesus, the yoke of self-centeredness is broken and transformed into a miracle of self-giving where all ate and were satisfied. Do we hide behind evangelisation when we are faced with the urgency of concrete people’s needs?

1ère lecture : Jr 28, 1-17
Cette année-là, au début du règne de Sédécias, roi de Juda, la quatrième année, au cinquième mois, le prophète Ananie, fils d’Azzour, originaire de Gabaon, me dit dans la maison du Seigneur, en présence des prêtres et de tout le peuple : « Ainsi parle le Seigneur de l’univers, le Dieu d’Israël : J’ai brisé le joug du roi de Babylone ! Dans deux ans, jour pour jour, je ferai revenir en ce lieu tous les objets de la maison du Seigneur que Nabucodonosor, roi de Babylone, a enlevés pour les emporter à Babylone. Je ramènerai ici Jékonias, fils de Joakim, roi de Juda, avec tous les déportés de Juda qui sont partis à Babylone – oracle du Seigneur –, car je vais briser le joug du roi de Babylone ! » Le prophète Jérémie répondit au prophète Ananie en présence des prêtres et de tout le peuple, qui se tenaient dans la maison du Seigneur. Il lui dit : « Amen ! Que le Seigneur agisse ainsi, que le Seigneur accomplisse ta prophétie : qu’il fasse revenir de Babylone les objets de la maison du Seigneur et tous les déportés. Cependant, écoute bien cette parole que je vais te faire entendre, à toi et à tout le peuple : Les prophètes qui nous ont précédés, toi et moi, depuis bien longtemps, ont prophétisé contre de nombreux pays et de grands royaumes la guerre, le malheur et la peste. Le prophète qui annonce la paix n’est reconnu comme prophète vraiment envoyé par le Seigneur, que si sa parole s’accomplit. » Alors le prophète Ananie enleva le joug que le prophète Jérémie s’était mis sur la nuque, et il le brisa. Et Ananie déclara en présence de tout le peuple : « Ainsi parle le Seigneur: De la même manière, dans deux ans, jour pour jour, je briserai le joug de Nabucodonosor, roi de Babylone, pour en délivrer toutes les nations. » Alors le prophète Jérémie alla son chemin. La parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Jérémie après que le prophète Ananie eut brisé le joug qui était sur sa nuque. « Va dire à Ananie : Ainsi parle le Seigneur : Tu as brisé un joug de bois, mais à sa place tu feras un joug de fer. Car ainsi parle le Seigneur de l’univers, le Dieu d’Israël : C’est un joug de fer que je mets sur la nuque de toutes ces nations, pour qu’elles servent Nabucodonosor, roi de Babylone. Et elles le serviront. Je lui ai donné même les bêtes sauvages. » Le prophète Jérémie dit alors au prophète Ananie : « Écoute bien, Ananie : le Seigneur ne t’a pas envoyé, et toi, tu rassures ce peuple par un mensonge. C’est pourquoi, ainsi parle le Seigneur : Je te renvoie de la surface de la terre ; tu mourras cette année, car c’est la révolte que tu as prêchée contre le Seigneur. » Le prophète Ananie mourut cette même année, au septième mois.

Qu’ils se tournent vers moi, ceux qui te craignent, ceux qui connaissent tes exigences. Que j’aie par tes commandements le cœur intègre : alors je ne serai pas humilié.
Des impies escomptent ma perte : moi, je réfléchis à tes exigences. De tes décisions, je ne veux pas m’écarter, car c’est toi qui m’enseignes.

Les foules l’apprirent et, quittant leurs villes, elles suivirent à pied. En débarquant, il vit une grande foule de gens ; il fut saisi de compassion envers eux et guérit leurs malades. Le soir venu, les disciples s’approchèrent et lui dirent : « L’endroit est désert et l’heure est déjà avancée. Renvoie donc la foule : qu’ils aillent dans les villages s’acheter de la nourriture ! » Mais Jésus leur dit : « Ils n’ont pas besoin de s’en aller. Donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger. » Alors ils lui disent: « Nous n’avons là que cinq pains et deux poissons. » Jésus dit : « Apportez-les moi. »
Puis, ordonnant à la foule de s’asseoir sur l’herbe, il prit les cinq pains et les deux poissons, et, levant les yeux au ciel, il prononça la bénédiction ; il rompit les pains,
il les donna aux disciples, et les disciples les donnèrent à la foule. Ils mangèrent tous et ils furent rassasiés. On ramassa les morceaux qui restaient : cela faisait douze paniers pleins. Ceux qui avaient mangé étaient environ cinq mille, sans compter les femmes et les enfants.

Méditation
La multiplication des pains dont il est fait mention dans l’évangile, au cœur même du désert, là où il n’y a rien à espérer est le geste prophétique par excellence : le Christ donne à profusion, sans rien retenir pour lui, y compris lorsque la situation semble perdue. La grande multiplication des pains de ce déjeuner sur l’herbe est l’un des signes laissés par Jésus pour livrer le mystère eucharistique au monde. C’est une nourriture divine et éternelle, sans cesse donnée comme nourriture de vérité et de bonheur. De cette nourriture-là, il en reste constamment à partager au-delà de toutes les espérances du peuple choisi pour en être le premier témoin. Prenons le temps pour laisser le seigneur venir à notre rencontre, il veut nous combler de ses biens !

First reading: Exodus 16:2-4,12-15
The whole community of the sons of Israel began to complain against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness and said to them, ‘Why did we not die at the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we were able to sit down to pans of meat and could eat bread to our heart’s content! As it is, you have brought us to this wilderness to starve this whole company to death!’ Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Now I will rain down bread for you from the heavens. The things we have heard and understood, the things our fathers have told us, these we will not hide from their children but will tell them to the next generation:

Second reading: Ephesians 4:17,20-24
I want to urge you in the name of the Lord, not to go on living the aimless kind of life that pagans live. Now that is hardly the way you have learnt from Christ, unless you failed to hear him properly when you were taught what the truth is in Jesus. You must give up your old way of life; you must put aside your old self, which gets corrupted by following illusory desires. Your mind must be renewed by a spiritual revolution so that you can put on the new self that has been created in God’s way, in the goodness and holiness of the truth.

Meditation
« Do not work for food that cannot last.” Jesus’ warning comes from the way the people he fed struggled to find him. He realised that they were looking for him not because they were spiritually hungry but because they ate and were filled physically. They were not looking for him because they had eaten and were spiritually satisfied, but because they ate the bread and were satisfied. Today’s Gospel continues to reveal Christ as the spiritual food that we should be concerned about. Why is this food given much weight? The first reason is its nature and its union with God. That food gets the first place because it gives life to the world. This life should be distinguished from the usual way of life. It is divine life that lasts forever: « He who comes to me will never be hungry; he who believes in me will never thirst.» So, it is an invitation to see the goodness of God and his union with us, in a way that makes our presence here on earth hopeful.

Prière d’ouverture
Assiste tes enfants, Seigneur, et montre à ceux qui t’implorent ton inépuisable bonté. C’est leur fierté de t’avoir pour Créateur et Providence, restaure pour eux ta création, et l’ayant renouvelée, protège-la. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Ex 16, 2-4.12-15
En ces jours-là, dans le désert, toute la communauté des fils d’Israël récriminait contre Moïse et son frère Aaron. Les fils d’Israël leur dirent : « Ah ! Il aurait mieux valu mourir de la main du Seigneur, au pays d’Égypte, quand nous étions assis près des marmites de viande, quand nous mangions du pain à satiété ! Vous nous avez fait sortir dans ce désert pour faire mourir de faim tout ce peuple assemblé ! » Le Seigneur dit à Moïse : « Voici que, du ciel, je vais faire pleuvoir du pain pour vous. Le peuple sortira pour recueillir chaque jour sa ration quotidienne, et ainsi je vais le mettre à l’épreuve : je verrai s’il marchera, ou non, selon ma loi. J’ai entendu les récriminations des fils d’Israël. Tu leur diras: ‘Au coucher du soleil, vous mangerez de la viande et, le lendemain matin, vous aurez du pain à satiété. Alors vous saurez que moi, le Seigneur, je suis votre Dieu.’ » Le soir même, surgit un vol de cailles qui recouvrirent le camp ; et, le lendemain matin, il y avait une couche de rosée autour du camp. Lorsque la couche de rosée s’évapora, il y avait, à la surface du désert, une fine croûte, quelque chose de fin comme du givre, sur le sol. Quand ils virent cela, les fils d’Israël se dirent l’un à l’autre : « Mann hou ? » (ce qui veut dire : Qu’est-ce que c’est ?), car ils ne savaient pas ce que c’était. Moïse leur dit : « C’est le pain que le Seigneur vous donne à manger. »

R/ Le Seigneur donne le pain du ciel !
Nous avons entendu et nous savons ce que nos pères nous ont raconté : et nous le redirons à l’âge qui vient, les titres de gloire du Seigneur.
Il commande aux nuées là-haut, il ouvre les écluses du ciel : pour les nourrir il fait pleuvoir la manne, il leur donne le froment du ciel.
Chacun se nourrit du pain des Forts, il les pourvoit de vivres à satiété. Tel un berger, il conduit son peuple. Il le fait entrer dans son domaine sacré.
2ème lecture : Ep 4, 17.20-24
Frères, je vous le dis, j’en témoigne dans le Seigneur : vous ne devez plus vous conduire comme les païens qui se laissent guider par le néant de leur pensée. Mais vous, ce n’est pas ainsi que l’on vous a appris à connaître le Christ, si du moins l’annonce et l’enseignement que vous avez reçus à son sujet s’accordent à la vérité qui est en Jésus. Il s’agit de vous défaire de votre conduite d’autrefois, c’est-à-dire de l’homme ancien corrompu par les convoitises qui l’entraînent dans l’erreur. Laissez-vous renouveler par la transformation spirituelle de votre pensée. Revêtez-vous de l’homme nouveau, créé, selon Dieu, dans la justice et la sainteté conformes à la vérité.
Acclamation
Alléluia. Alléluia. L’homme ne vit pas seulement de pain, mais de toute parole qui sort de la bouche de Dieu. Alléluia. (Mt 4, 4b)

En ce temps-là, quand la foule vit que Jésus n’était pas là, ni ses disciples, les gens montèrent dans les barques et se dirigèrent vers Capharnaüm à la recherche de Jésus. L’ayant trouvé sur l’autre rive, ils lui dirent : « Rabbi, quand es-tu arrivé ici ? » Jésus leur répondit : « Amen, amen, je vous le dis : vous me cherchez, non parce que vous avez vu des signes, mais parce que vous avez mangé de ces pains et que vous avez été rassasiés. Travaillez non pas pour la nourriture qui se perd, mais pour la nourriture qui demeure jusque dans la vie éternelle, celle que vous donnera le Fils de l’homme, lui que Dieu, le Père, a marqué de son sceau. » Ils lui dirent alors : « Que devons-nous faire pour travailler aux œuvres de Dieu ? » Jésus leur répondit : « L’œuvre de Dieu, c’est que vous croyiez en celui qu’il a envoyé. » Ils lui dirent alors : « Quel signe vas-tu accomplir pour que nous puissions le voir, et te croire ? Quelle œuvre vas-tu faire? Méditation Une foule vient à Jésus, assoiffée de miracles et de sensationnel… Mais lui connaît le cœur de l’homme, sans mépriser ce désir, va le mener pas à pas, de questions en réponses, en des abîmes de profondeurs. Les questions posées portent sur le visible et l’immédiat : la réponse apportée par le Christ concerne tout l’homme, corps et âme, et tous les hommes, pas seulement ceux qui l’ont connu durant sa vie terrestre ! Nous croyons parfois que nous serions plus heureux avec du pain en abondance, une nouvelle voiture ou un talent qui nous vaudrait l’admiration de tous. Le Seigneur nous répond inlassablement que nous ne pouvons trouver le bonheur qu’en sa présence et sa présence nous est à chaque instant de notre vie.

Saint Germanus of Auxerre
(c.378 – 448)

After pursuing a legal career and being governor of a province, he was consecrated bishop of Auxerre in Gaul. He strongly fought the heresy of Pelagianism. His mission was successful, and he also led the native Britons to a victory against the invading pagan Picts and Saxons. He died at Ravenna in the late 440s.

God is in his holy place, God who unites those who dwell in his house; he himself gives might and strength to his people.

First reading : Jeremiah 26:11-16,24
The priests and prophets addressed the officials and all the people, ‘This man deserves to die, since he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.’ Jeremiah, however, replied to the people as follows: ‘The Lord himself sent me to say all the things you have heard against this Temple and this city. So now amend your behaviour and actions, listen to the voice of the Lord your God: if you do, he will relent and not bring down on you the disaster he has pronounced against you. For myself, I am as you see in your hands. Do whatever you please or think right with me. But be sure of this, that if you put me to death, you will be bringing innocent blood on yourselves, on this city and on its citizens, since the Lord has truly sent me to you to say all these words in your hearing.’ The officials and all the people then said to the priests and prophets, ‘This man does not deserve to die: he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God.’ Jeremiah had a protector in Ahikam son of Shaphan, so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.

Gospel : Matthew 14:1-12
Herod the tetrarch heard about the reputation of Jesus, and said to his court, ‘This is John the Baptist himself; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.’ Now it was Herod who had arrested John, chained him up and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. For John had told him, ‘It is against the Law for you to have her.’ He had wanted to kill him but was afraid of the people, who regarded John as a prophet. Then, during the celebrations for Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company, and so delighted Herod that he promised on oath to give her anything she asked. Prompted by her mother she said, ‘Give me John the Baptist’s head, here, on a dish.’ The king was distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he ordered it to be given her, and sent and had John beheaded in the prison. The head was brought in on a dish and given to the girl who took it to her mother. John’s disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went off to tell Jesus.

Meditation
“Give me John the Baptist’s head, here, on a dish.” Herod had deeply internalised a life of immoral values. These immoral values had eventually formed an integral part of his character and identity as a father and an authority. He therefore interpreted the prophetic pronouncements from John the Baptist as a real threat to his person and authority. Just like Herod and Herodias, the natural defensive strategy would be an attempt to eliminate the sources of threat. What Herod failed to understand is that decapitation of a prophet doesn’t mean decapitation of the Truth. John the Baptism was only illuminating an already existing truth. Because, moral truths are deeply engrained in each person’s heart. As such, they can be momentarily obscured or silenced but never eliminated. Herodias had manipulated her daughter to influence the office which Herod represented. Internalised immoral values can easily find their transmission into the family and governance structures. How do we respond when we are told truths that we don’t appreciate? How do we stand for the Gospel truth in the midst of threats?

Est-ce que le roi de Juda, Ézékias, et tous les gens de Juda l’ont fait mourir ? Le roi n’a-t-il pas craint le Seigneur, n’a-t-il pas apaisé le visage du Seigneur, si bien que le Seigneur a renoncé au malheur qu’il avait proféré contre eux ? Et nous, nous irions faire ce grand mal à nous-mêmes ? »

C’était à cause d’Hérodiade, la femme de son frère Philippe. En effet, Jean lui avait dit : « Tu n’as pas le droit de l’avoir pour femme.» Hérode cherchait à le faire mourir, mais il eut peur de la foule qui le tenait pour un prophète. Lorsqu’arriva l’anniversaire d’Hérode, la fille d’Hérodiade dansa au milieu des convives, et elle plut à Hérode. Alors il s’engagea par serment à lui donner ce qu’elle demanderait. Poussée par sa mère, elle dit : « Donne-moi ici, sur un plat, la tête de Jean le Baptiste.» Le roi fut contrarié ; mais à cause de son serment et des convives, il commanda de la lui donner. Il envoya décapiter Jean dans la prison. La tête de celui-ci fut apportée sur un plat et donnée à la jeune fille, qui l’apporta à sa mère. Les disciples de Jean arrivèrent pour prendre son corps, qu’ils ensevelirent; puis ils allèrent l’annoncer à Jésus.

Voilà un épisode qui a de quoi faire frémir. Il montre combien un cœur endurci, celui d’Hérode, ne peut entendre un avis contraire au sien. Jean-Baptiste lui a tout simplement dit qu’il ne lui est pas permis de prendre la femme de son frère. Plutôt que de réfléchir, Hérode et Hérodiade se réfugient dans la violence et la haine. Ils suppriment la voix du précurseur. Jean-Baptiste vit la passion du Christ avant l’heure. Voilà comment les paroles des justes sont incomprises et mal interprétées. Voilà de quoi nous faire réfléchir sur la façon dont nous accueillons le Christ, sa parole et sa lumière. Jusqu’où sommes-nous prêts à aller?

Il fut d’abord prêtre séculier. En 1839, il entra chez les pères Maristes. Il quitta cette congrégation en 1856 suite aux apparitions de la Vierge Marie qui le chargeait de fonder un Institut sacerdotal voué à l’adoration perpétuelle du Saint Sacrement. Ses dernières années de vie furent marquées par de grandes incompréhensions entre ses religieux et lui.

Adorons Dieu dans sa sainte demeure. Il fait habiter les siens tous ensemble dans sa maison, c’est lui qui donne force et puissance à son peuple.

Tu protèges, Seigneur, ceux qui comptent sur toi, sans toi rien n’est fort et rien n’est saint. Multiplie pour nous tes gestes de miséricorde afin que, sous ta conduite, en faisant un bon usage des biens qui passent, nous puissions déjà nous attacher à ceux qui demeurent. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Jérémie 26, 1-9
Au début du règne de Jojakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, cette parole fut adressée à Jérémie par l’Éternel : « L’Éternel dit ceci : Tenez-vous dans le parvis du Temple du Seigneur. A tous les habitants des villes de Juda qui viennent se prosterner dans le temple de l’Eternel, tu dois dire toutes les paroles que je t’ai commandé de leur dire ; ne pas omettre une syllabe. Peut-être écouteront-ils et se détourneront-ils chacun de leur mauvaise voie : si c’est le cas, je céderai et ne ferai pas venir sur eux le désastre que j’avais prévu pour leurs méfaits. Dis-leur : « Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Si vous ne m’écoutez pas en suivant ma loi que je vous propose, en prêtant attention aux paroles de mes serviteurs les prophètes que je vous envoie avec tant d’obstination, sans que vous les écoutiez jamais pour eux, je traiterai ce temple comme j’ai traité Shiloh, et je ferai de cette ville une malédiction pour toutes les nations de la terre. Quand Jérémie eut fini de dire tout ce que le Seigneur lui avait ordonné de dire à tout le peuple, les prêtres et les prophètes se saisirent de lui et dirent : « Tu mourras ! Pourquoi as-tu fait cette prophétie au nom de l’Éternel : « Ce temple sera comme Shiloh, et cette ville sera désolée et inhabitée » ? » Et tout le peuple se pressait autour de Jérémie dans le temple de l’Éternel

R/Dans ton grand amour, réponds-moi, ô Dieu.
Sauve-moi, mon Dieu : les eaux montent jusqu’à ma gorge ! Plus abondants que les cheveux de ma tête, ceux qui m’en veulent sans raison.
Ils sont nombreux, mes détracteurs, à me haïr injustement. C’est pour toi que j’endure l’insulte, que la honte me couvre le visage.
Je suis un étranger pour mes frères, un inconnu pour les fils de ma mère. L’amour de ta maison m’a perdu ; on t’insulte, et l’insulte retombe sur moi.

Evangile : Matthieu 13, 54-58
En ce temps-là, Jésus se rendit dans son lieu d’origine, et il enseignait les gens dans leur synagogue, de telle manière qu’ils étaient frappés d’étonnement et disaient : « D’où lui viennent cette sagesse et ces miracles ? N’est-il pas le fils du charpentier ? Sa mère ne s’appelle-t-elle pas Marie, et ses frères: Jacques, Joseph, Simon et Jude ? Et ses sœurs ne sont-elles pas toutes chez nous ? Alors, d’où lui vient tout cela ? »
Et ils étaient profondément choqués à son sujet. Jésus leur dit : « Un prophète n’est méprisé que dans son pays et dans sa propre maison. » Et il ne fit pas beaucoup de miracles à cet endroit-là, à cause de leur manque de foi.

Jésus est à Nazareth. Ici, comme là-bas à Capharnaüm, il enseigne dans les synagogues. Les gens sont frappés de stupeur par sa sagesse et son autorité. Mais ici, Jésus, on le connaît bien, « vous savez, c’est lui, le fils du… ». Pauvres habitants de Nazareth ! Vous croyez si bien le connaître que vous l’enfermez dans ce que vous pensez savoir de lui. Avec les doutes et les suspicions on ferme la porte à ce qui est possible. Refuser de voir Dieu présent en chaque personne, c’est condamner celle-ci à la médiocrité, c’est lui refuser toute expérience, c’est le déshumaniser. Demandons à Notre Seigneur la grâce de le reconnaître en nous-mêmes et en chacun de nos frères et sœurs.
