1ère lecture : Jc 5,1-6
Vous autres, maintenant, les riches! Pleurez, lamentez-vous sur les malheurs qui vous attendent. Vos richesses sont pourries, vos vêtements sont mangés des mites, votre or et votre argent sont rouillés. Cette rouille sera un témoignage contre vous, elle dévorera votre chair comme un feu. Vous avez amassé des richesses, alors que nous sommes dans les derniers jours ! Le salaire dont vous avez frustré les ouvriers qui ont moissonné vos champs, le voici qui crie, et les clameurs des moissonneurs sont parvenues aux oreilles du Seigneur de l’univers. Vous avez mené sur terre une vie de luxe et de délices, et vous vous êtes rassasiés au jour du massacre. Vous avez condamné le juste et vous l’avez tué, sans qu’il vous oppose de résistance.

R/ Heureux les pauvres de cœur, car le royaume des Cieux est à eux!
Voici le destin des insensés et l’avenir de qui aime les entendre : troupeau parqué pour les enfers et que la mort mène paître.
Dans la mort, s’effaceront leurs visages : pour eux, plus de palais ! Mais Dieu rachètera ma vie aux griffes de la mort : c’est lui qui me prendra.
Ne crains pas l’homme qui s’enrichit, qui accroît le luxe de sa maison : aux enfers il n’emporte rien ; sa gloire ne descend pas avec lui.
De son vivant, il s’est béni lui-même : « On t’applaudit car tout va bien pour toi ! » Mais il rejoint la lignée de ses ancêtres qui ne verront jamais plus la lumière.

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Celui qui vous donnera un verre d’eau au nom de votre appartenance au Christ, amen, je vous le dis, il ne restera pas sans récompense. Celui qui est un scandale, une occasion de chute, pour un seul de ces petits qui croient en moi, mieux vaudrait pour lui qu’on lui attache au cou une de ces meules que tournent les ânes, et qu’on le jette à la mer. Et si ta main est pour toi une occasion de chute, coupe-la. Mieux vaut pour toi entrer manchot dans la vie éternelle que de t’en aller dans la géhenne avec tes deux mains, là où le feu ne s’éteint pas. Si ton pied est pour toi une occasion de chute, coupe-le. Mieux vaut pour toi entrer estropié dans la vie éternelle que de t’en aller dans la géhenne avec tes deux pieds. Si ton œil est pour toi une occasion de chute, arrache-le. Mieux vaut pour toi entrer borgne dans le royaume de Dieu que de t’en aller dans la géhenne avec tes deux yeux, là où le ver ne meurt pas et où le feu ne s’éteint pas. Chacun sera salé au feu. C’est une bonne chose que le sel; mais s’il cesse d’être du sel, avec quoi allez-vous lui rendre de la saveur? Ayez du sel en vous-mêmes, et vivez en paix entre vous. »

Méditation
L’on serait tenté de penser que le passage de ce jour nous invite à une radicalité extrême allant jusqu’à l’abnégation de soi. L’orientation que veut inculquer le Christ à ses disciples est tout autre à savoir l’acquitter dans la recherche des vertus, le dynamisme dans la vie spirituelle. Ainsi il ne s’agit pas dans ce récit d’une amputation d’un membre de son corps ou d’un organe. La parole si dure donnée par le Seigneur révèle à la fois l’insistance et l’importance de la recherche de la sainteté. Seigneur que je ne sois pas pour mes frères et sœurs une occasion de chute. Amen !

Meditation
In today’s society, the worth of something is determined by how it compares to other goods of the same kind: stocks, food, clothing, and even music and films. However, certain things have absolute worth: the value of a soul. Nothing comes close! Jesus depicts this utter lack of comparison by cutting off whatever becomes an impediment. You are so precious that you must be willing to refuse, submit, mute, and even sacrifice your own body or any of its members to save your soul. Do I cherish my immortal soul, my call to everlasting life? If so, do I demonstrate this by the self-denial I exercise in managing what causes me (and, eventually, others through me) to stumble? How often do I prefer my «things» over the loved ones who rely on my Christian example? How daring is my faith?

Bien-aimés, vous autres, maintenant, vous dites : « Aujourd’hui ou demain nous irons dans telle ou telle ville, nous y passerons l’année, nous ferons du commerce et nous gagnerons de l’argent », alors que vous ne savez même pas ce que sera votre vie demain! Vous n’êtes qu’un peu de brume, qui paraît un instant puis disparaît. Vous devriez dire au contraire : « Si le Seigneur le veut bien, nous serons en vie et nous ferons ceci ou cela. » Et voilà que vous mettez votre fierté dans vos vantardises. Toute fierté de ce genre est mauvaise ! Être en mesure de faire le bien et ne pas le faire, c’est un péché.

Nul ne peut racheter son frère ni payer à Dieu sa rançon : aussi cher qu’il puisse payer, toute vie doit finir.
Peut-on vivre indéfiniment sans jamais voir la fosse ? Vous voyez les sages mourir : comme le fou et l’insensé ils périssent, laissant à d’autres leur fortune.

Méditation
La plus grande forme de vie à la suite du Christ puise son essence dans la vertu d’humilité qui seul élève le disciple vers des compréhensions plus grandes du mystère de Dieu et de ses actions. C’est par le regard d’amour humble en effet que le disciple parvient à saisir la volonté de son maître. Le ton est donné par Jésus dans l’évangile de ce jour aux apôtres et par extension à tout fidèle du Seigneur, de se garder de tout plein estime de soi qui pourrait constituer un obstacle à la volonté de Dieu. Ne l’en empêchez pas dit Jésus, celui qui n’est pas contre nous est avec nous. O Seigneur donne-moi de te reconnaitre aussi dans l’action du frère. Amen !

Meditation
Jesus tells us, everyone who performs miracles in his name, including demon exorcism, acknowledges Christ’s authority. In effect, Lumen Gentium teaches that «many elements of sanctification» unique to the Catholic Church operate «outside of its visible structure» and «towards Catholic unity». Such a person’s attitudes and beliefs may be flawed, yet his miracles are a testament to Christ and his message. Unlike the Scribes and Pharisees, who appeared implacable in their hostility, he joined forces with the disciples. As a result, we collaborate with other Christians and people of goodwill whenever feasible, and we hope that one day we shall all be one, as Jesus and the Father are (John 17:20-23). While the Church fosters ecumenism, we must seek the spirit of discernment and consult our spiritual leaders to help us clear any doubts. Therefore, membership in a specific community is not a criterion. There can be a strong temptation for exclusivity among us. Many Christian groups can lapse into this trap. The litmus test is whether the actions of others are consistent with our objectives of truth, love, justice, compassion, freedom, peace, nonviolence, etc.

Bien-aimés, d’où viennent les guerres, d’où viennent les conflits entre vous ? N’est-ce pas justement de tous ces désirs qui mènent leur combat en vous-mêmes ? Vous êtes pleins de convoitises et vous n’obtenez rien, alors vous tuez ; vous êtes jaloux et vous n’arrivez pas à vos fins, alors vous entrez en conflit et vous faites la guerre. Vous n’obtenez rien parce que vous ne demandez pas ; vous demandez, mais vous ne recevez rien ; en effet, vos demandes sont mauvaises, puisque c’est pour tout dépenser en plaisirs Adultères que vous êtes! Ne savez-vous pas que l’amour pour le monde rend ennemi de Dieu ? Donc celui qui veut être ami du monde se pose en ennemi de Dieu. Ou bien pensez-vous que l’Écriture parle pour rien quand elle dit : Dieu veille jalousement sur l’Esprit qu’il a fait habiter en nous ? Dieu ne nous donne-t-il pas une grâce plus grande encore ? C’est ce que dit l’Écriture : Dieu s’oppose aux orgueilleux, aux humbles il accorde sa grâce. Soumettez-vous donc à Dieu, et résistez au diable : il s’enfuira loin de vous. Approchez-vous de Dieu, et lui s’approchera de vous. Pécheurs, enlevez la souillure de vos mains ; esprits doubles, purifiez vos cœurs. Reconnaissez votre misère, prenez le deuil et pleurez ; que votre rire se change en deuil et votre joie en accablement. Abaissez-vous devant le Seigneur, et il vous élèvera.

En ce temps-là, Jésus traversait la Galilée avec ses disciples, et il ne voulait pas qu’on le sache, car il enseignait ses disciples en leur disant : « Le Fils de l’homme est livré aux mains des hommes ; ils le tueront et, trois jours après sa mort, il ressuscitera. » Mais les disciples ne comprenaient pas ces paroles et ils avaient peur de l’interroger. Ils arrivèrent à Capharnaüm, et, une fois à la maison, Jésus leur demanda : « De quoi discutiez-vous en chemin?» Ils se taisaient, car, en chemin, ils avaient discuté entre eux pour savoir qui était le plus grand. S’étant assis, Jésus appela les Douze et leur dit : « Si quelqu’un veut être le premier, qu’il soit le dernier de tous et le serviteur de tous. » Prenant alors un enfant, il le plaça au milieu d’eux, l’embrassa, et leur dit : « Quiconque accueille en mon nom un enfant comme celui-ci, c’est moi qu’il accueille. Et celui qui m’accueille, ce n’est pas moi qu’il accueille, mais Celui qui m’a envoyé. »

Méditation
Pauvres disciples ! Comme leur raisonnement est prosaïque ! Ils cherchent à être appréciés, loués, gratifiés sur le champ. Était-ce vraiment ce à quoi ils aspiraient en suivant Jésus ? Lui parlait de résurrection, de vie éternelle, et eux pensaient aux flatteurs de la terre. Mais Jésus ne désespère pas. Il les prend comme ils sont. Il croit en leur « transformation ». Il sait qu’il faut y aller doucement, et Il les instruit, patiemment, comme des enfants, à partir d’images, de paraboles, d’exemples familiers. Et tout naturellement, Il prend un enfant sur ses genoux. Si vous ne redevenez comme des enfants (Matthieu 18.3). Et tous savent qu’un enfant aime sans calcul. Qu’il est toute gratuité et confiance, qu’il se remet entièrement entre les mains de ses parents. Et les disciples comprendront que la vraie grandeur est de redevenir tout petit. De tout donner aux autres et souffrir pour eux. S’oublier pour eux, mourir pour eux. Le Christ l’a fait pour nous, et avec lui des milliers de chrétiens ont tout donné jusqu’à leur vie. C’est ce qui fait la sainteté de l’Église.

Where do these wars and battles between yourselves first start? Isn’t it precisely in the desires fighting inside your own selves? You want something and you haven’t got it; so you are prepared to kill. You have an ambition that you cannot satisfy; so you fight to get your way by force. Why you don’t have what you want is because you don’t pray for it; when you do pray and don’t get it, it is because you have not prayed properly, you have prayed for something to indulge your own desires. You are as unfaithful as adulterous wives; don’t you realise that making the world your friend is making God your enemy? Anyone who chooses the world for his friend turns himself into God’s enemy. Surely you don’t think scripture is wrong when it says: the spirit which he sent to live in us wants us for himself alone? But he has been even more generous to us, as scripture says: God opposes the proud but he gives generously to the humble. Give in to God, then; resist the devil, and he will run away from you. The nearer you go to God, the nearer he will come to you. Clean your hands, you sinners, and clear your minds, you waverers. Look at your wretched condition, and weep for it in misery; be miserable instead of laughing, gloomy instead of happy. Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will lift you up.

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that we may experience the effects of the salvation which is pledged to us by these mysteries. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The disciples argued about who was the greatest among them, demonstrating that they were full of foolish desire like the rest of the world. Such arrogant aim breeds unending squabbling and conflict. In effect, this not only distracts individuals from their primary job in life, which is to be helpful and supportive to one another, but it also defeats that objective because we are now pulling down our brothers and sisters who we are supposed to support. We don’t even get what we want when we fight. In humble prayer, we should ask for anything we require. We should ask for whatever is necessary for our salvation without jeopardising our neighbour’s growth. God only responds to those types of prayers. We discipline our lives and pay attention to the voice of Christ as he challenges us with the facts of life, just as he did the apostles. We must be courageous enough to face life’s challenges with faith, humility, and compassion toward others. This is the only way to be certain of the victory that Christ’s resurrection has in store for us.

Gospel: John 19:25-34
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son.’ Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother.’ And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home. After this, Jesus knew that everything had now been completed, and to fulfil the scripture perfectly he said, ‘I am thirsty.’ A jar full of vinegar stood there, so putting a sponge soaked in the vinegar on a hyssop stick they held it up to his mouth. After Jesus had taken the vinegar he said, ‘It is accomplished’; and bowing his head he gave up his spirit. It was Preparation Day, and to prevent the bodies remaining on the cross during the sabbath – since that sabbath was a day of special solemnity – the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken away. Having received the pledge of redemption and of life we humbly pray, O Lord, that with the Blessed Virgin’s motherly help your Church may teach all nations by proclaiming the Gospel and, thanks to the outpouring of the Spirit, may fill the whole earth. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Mary was called the New Eve by the first-century Church Fathers. Saint Anselm addressed Mary thus: “You are the mother of justification and of the justified, the Mother of reconciliation and of the reconciled, the mother of salvation and of the saved.” As Eve was “the mother of all the living” (Gen. 3:20), Mary was the mother of all those living in Christ. St. John states that this Woman’s children are “those who keep the commandments of God and bear testimony to Jesus” in Revelation 12:17. Mary joined her Son’s sacrifice on Calvary and gave birth to the new humanity via labour pains. The Crucified One declares Mary’s maternity to the Apostle John and all disciples by saying, “Woman, behold your son.” Jesus tenderly entrusted Mary to John. Since Jesus is our brother and Mary is His mother, Mary is our mother also. Thus, the Church’s Tradition from the Apostles informs us that the Lord was committing all of His followers to Mary, in the figure of St. John. In effect, “Mary is mother wherever Jesus is Saviour and head of the Mystical Body.” (CCC 973)

Évangile : Jn 19, 25-34
En ce temps-là, près de la croix de Jésus se tenaient sa mère et la sœur de sa mère, Marie, femme de Cléophas, et Marie Madeleine. Jésus, voyant sa mère, et près d’elle le disciple qu’il aimait, dit à sa mère : « Femme, voici ton fils. » Puis il dit au disciple : « Voici ta mère. » Et à partir de cette heure-là, le disciple la prit chez lui. Après cela, sachant que tout, désormais, était achevé, pour que l’Écriture s’accomplisse jusqu’au bout, Jésus dit : « J’ai soif. » Il y avait là un récipient plein d’une boisson vinaigrée. On fixa donc une éponge remplie de ce vinaigre à une branche d’hysope, et on l’approcha de sa bouche. Quand il eut pris le vinaigre, Jésus dit : « Tout est accompli. » Puis, inclinant la tête, il remit l’esprit. Comme c’était le jour de la Préparation (c’est-à-dire le vendredi), il ne fallait pas laisser les corps en croix durant le sabbat, d’autant plus que ce sabbat était le grand jour de la Pâque. Aussi les Juifs demandèrent à Pilate qu’on enlève les corps après leur avoir brisé les jambes. Les soldats allèrent donc briser les jambes du premier, puis de l’autre homme crucifié avec Jésus. Quand ils arrivèrent à Jésus, voyant qu’il était déjà mort, ils ne lui brisèrent pas les jambes, mais un des soldats avec sa lance lui perça le côté ; et aussitôt, il en sortit du sang et de l’eau. – Acclamons la Parole de Dieu.

Méditation
Si nous disons que nous sommes sans soucis, que nous sommes imperturbables, alors nous sommes des menteurs comme le dit l’apôtre St Jean la vérité n’est pas en nous. Il existe dans toute vie humaine des situations troubles devant lesquels nous semblons impuissants. Aujourd’hui nous pouvons comprendre que seule notre proximité avec le Christ-Jésus dans la prière nous assure la victoire. Sans moi a-t-Il dit, vous ne pouvez rien faire. Seigneur apprends-moi à prier. Amen !

Aujourd´hui, Seigneur, par le mystère de la Pentecôte, tu sanctifies ton Église chez tous les peuples et dans toutes les nations; Répands les dons du Saint-Esprit sur l´immensité du monde, et continue dans les cœurs des croyants l´œuvre d´amour que tu as entreprise au début de la prédication évangélique. 1ère lecture : Ac 2, 1-11
Quand arriva le jour de la Pentecôte, au terme des cinquante jours après Pâques, ils se trouvaient réunis tous ensemble. Soudain un bruit survint du ciel comme un violent coup de vent : la maison où ils étaient assis en fut remplie tout entière. Alors leur apparurent des langues qu’on aurait dites de feu, qui se partageaient, et il s’en posa une sur chacun d’eux. Tous furent remplis d’Esprit Saint : ils se mirent à parler en d’autres langues, et chacun s’exprimait selon le don de l’Esprit. Or, il y avait, résidant à Jérusalem, des Juifs religieux, venant de toutes les nations sous le ciel. Lorsque ceux-ci entendirent la voix qui retentissait, ils se rassemblèrent en foule. Ils étaient en pleine confusion parce que chacun d’eux entendait dans son propre dialecte ceux qui parlaient. Dans la stupéfaction et l’émerveillement, ils disaient: « Ces gens qui parlent ne sont-ils pas tous galiléens? Comment se fait-il que chacun de nous les entende dans son propre dialecte, sa langue maternelle ? Parthes, Mèdes et Élamites, habitants de la Mésopotamie, de la Judée et de la Cappadoce, de la province du Pont et de celle d’Asie, de la Phrygie et de la Pamphylie, de l’Égypte et des contrées de Libye proches de Cyrène, Romains de passage, Juifs de naissance et convertis, Crétois et Arabes, tous nous les entendons parler dans nos langues des merveilles de Dieu. »

2ème lecture : Ga 5,16-25
Frères, je vous le dis : marchez sous la conduite de l’Esprit Saint, et vous ne risquerez pas de satisfaire les convoitises de la chair. Car les tendances de la chair s’opposent à l’Esprit, et les tendances de l’Esprit s’opposent à la chair. En effet, il y a là un affrontement qui vous empêche de faire tout ce que vous voudriez. Mais si vous vous laissez conduire par l’Esprit, vous n’êtes pas soumis à la Loi. On sait bien à quelles actions mène la chair: inconduite, impureté, débauche idolâtrie, sorcellerie, haines, rivalité, jalousie, emportements, intrigues, divisions, sectarisme, envie, beuveries, orgies et autres choses du même genre. Je vous préviens, comme je l’ai déjà fait: ceux qui commettent de telles actions ne recevront pas en héritage le royaume de Dieu. Mais voici le fruit de l’Esprit : amour, joie, paix, patience, bonté, bienveillance, fidélité, douceur et maîtrise de soi. En ces domaines, la Loi n’intervient pas. Ceux qui sont au Christ Jésus ont crucifié en eux la chair, avec ses passions et ses convoitises. Puisque l’Esprit nous fait vivre, marchons sous la conduite de l’Esprit.

Évangile : Jn 15, 26-27 ; 16, 12-15
En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Quand viendra le Défenseur, que je vous enverrai d’auprès du Père, lui, l’Esprit de vérité qui procède du Père, il rendra témoignage en ma faveur. Et vous aussi, vous allez rendre témoignage, car vous êtes avec moi depuis le commencement. J’ai encore beaucoup de choses à vous dire, mais pour l’instant vous ne pouvez pas les porter. Quand il viendra, lui, l’Esprit de vérité, il vous conduira dans la vérité tout entière. En effet, ce qu’il dira ne viendra pas de lui-même : mais ce qu’il aura entendu, il le dira; et ce qui va venir, il vous le fera connaître. Lui me glorifiera, car il recevra ce qui vient de moi pour vous le faire connaître. Tout ce que possède le Père est à moi ; voilà pourquoi je vous ai dit : L’Esprit reçoit ce qui vient de moi pour vous le faire connaître. »

Dieu notre Père, réponds à notre attente, souviens-toi de la promesse de ton Fils: Que l´Esprit Saint nous fasse pénétrer plus avant dans l´intelligence du mystère eucharistique et nous ouvre à la vérité tout entière. Par Jésus.

Dieu qui accordes les biens du ciel à ton Église, protège la grâce que tu viens de lui donner: Que le souffle de la Pentecôte agisse avec toujours plus de force; que ce repas sanctifié par l´Esprit fasse progresser le monde vers son salut. Par Jésus.
Méditation
C’est au jour de la pentecôte que se réalise la promesse du Seigneur : l’Esprit Saint souffle sur les apôtres, un souffle nouveau leur est donné et le vent missionnaire est relancé. L’Eglise nait de cette effusion de l’Esprit, et c’est elle qui est en marche depuis lors en emportant sur la barque des âmes au Christ pour leur sanctification et leur propre salut. Les Sacrements deviennent dès lors pour l’Eglise moyens ineffables, sources incontournables du salut. Chaque chrétien de fait a le devoir de s’examiner lui-même en évaluant sa proximité avec le Christ Lui qui se donne dans les sacrements de son Eglise. A la table du Seigneur je m’avancerai tous les jours de ma vie. Amen !

Second reading : 1 Cor. 12:3-7,12-13
No one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord’ unless he is under the influence of the Holy Spirit. There is a variety of gifts but always the same Spirit; there are all sorts of service to be done, but always to the same Lord; working in all sorts of different ways in different people, it is the same God who is working in all of them. The particular way in which the Spirit is given to each person is for a good purpose. Just as a human body, though it is made up of many parts, is a single unit because all these parts, though many, make one body, so it is with Christ. In the one Spirit we were all baptised, Jews as well as Greeks, slaves as well as citizens, and one Spirit was given to us all to drink.

Gospel : John 20:19-23

For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those whose sins you retain, they are retained.’

O God, who bestow heavenly gifts upon your Church, safeguard, we pray, the grace you have given, that the gift of the Holy Spirit poured out upon her may retain all its force and that this spiritual food may gain her abundance of eternal redemption. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The Baptism of Fire should not be confused with the sacrament of Baptism. An intrinsic connection remains between the sacrament of Baptism and the Holy Spirit. The best relationship between the Holy Spirit and Baptism is done by Saint John Paul II in his General Audience, September 6, 1989: “In the light of Pentecost, we can also understand better the significance of Baptism as a first sacrament, insofar as it is a work of the Holy Spirit…. The Baptismal walk in newness of life began on Pentecost day at Jerusalem” The Baptism of Fire experienced in the Acts of the Apostles 2, 1-11 marks the “Birthday of the Church” because on this day, with the Descent of the Holy Spirit, Christ’s mission is completed, and the New Covenant is inaugurated. Today, the Church celebrates the day God sends the Spirit of His Son into the world. The Holy Spirit gives us the Church, and she, in turn, gives us the sacraments. Saint Augustine in his Sermo, no. 267 teaches us that “what the soul is to man’s body, the Holy Spirit is to the Body of Christ, which is the Church. The Holy Spirit does in the whole church what the soul does in the members of the one body”. Cardinal Newman (PPSIII, sermon 19) opines that “The Holy Spirit came to finish in us, what Christ had finished in Himself, but left unfinished as regards us” “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love.”
