SAINT Pius of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio)
Padre Pio of Pietrelcina was a Capuchin friar who for more than fifty years bore the stigmata or the bleeding wounds of Jesus. He died a few days after the fiftieth anniversary of his receiving the stigmata, and over 100,000 people attended his funeral.

Gospel: Luke 8:4-15
With a large crowd gathering and people from every town finding their way to him, Jesus used this parable: “A sower went out to sow his seed. As he sowed, some fell on the edge of the path and was trampled on; and the birds of the air ate it up. Some seed fell on rock, and when it came up it withered away, having no moisture. Some seed fell amongst thorns and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some seed fell into rich soil and grew and produced its crop a hundredfold.” Saying this he cried, “Listen, anyone who has ears to hear!” His disciples asked him what this parable might mean, and he said, “The mysteries of the kingdom of God are revealed to you; for the rest there are only parables, so that they may see but not perceive, listen but not understand. This, then, is what the parable means: the seed is the word of God. Those on the edge of the path are people who have heard it, and then the devil comes and carries away the word from their hearts in case they should believe and be saved. Those on the rock are people who, when they first hear it, welcome the word with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of trial they give up. As for the part that fell into thorns, this is people who have heard, but as they go on their way they are choked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life and do not reach maturity. As for the part in the rich soil, this is people with a noble and generous heart who have heard the word and take it to themselves and yield a harvest through their perseverance.”

Meditation
This parable surprisingly might be challenging us too. Perhaps this is how we should think of the pathway – the rocky soil and the thorn strewn patches are different areas of each of our hearts, rather than different categories of persons. Let us ask the Lord to extend the positive areas of good and productive soil in our lives, something that only he can do. In this way we will be able to “hold fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patient endurance”. The explanation of the parable, emphasizing how the proclamation was received, fits the parable itself perfectly; many did not receive the word of Christ, others did not persevere etc. But the word itself is powerful such that it produce and continues to produce a hundredfold in many people.

SAINT Maurice
et ses compagnons Martyrs
L’abbaye de Saint-Maurice-d’Agaune, en Valais, conserve les reliques de martyrs de la fin du 3e siècle. D’après saint Eucher, évêque de Lyon (+446), il s’agirait de soldats de la légion thébaine dont le chef s’appelait Maurice et qui refusèrent de sacrifier aux dieux.

1ère lecture : 1 Tm 6, 2c-12
Bien-aimé, voilà ce que tu dois enseigner et recommander. Si quelqu’un donne un enseignement différent, et n’en vient pas aux paroles solides, celles de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ, et à l’enseignement qui est en accord avec la piété, un tel homme est aveuglé par l’orgueil, il ne sait rien, c’est un malade de la discussion et des querelles de mots. De tout cela, il ne sort que jalousie, rivalité, blasphèmes, soupçons malveillants, disputes interminables de gens à l’intelligence corrompue, qui sont coupés de la vérité et ne voient dans la religion qu’une source de profit. Certes, il y a un grand profit dans la religion si l’on se contente de ce que l’on a. De même que nous n’avons rien apporté dans ce monde, nous n’en pourrons rien emporter. Si nous avons de quoi manger et nous habiller, sachons-nous en contenter. Ceux qui veulent s’enrichir tombent dans le piège de la tentation, dans une foule de convoitises absurdes et dangereuses, qui plongent les gens dans la ruine et la perdition. Car la racine de tous les maux, c’est l’amour de l’argent. Pour s’y être attachés, certains se sont égarés loin de la foi et se sont infligé à eux-mêmes des tourments sans nombre. Mais toi, homme de Dieu, fuis tout cela ; recherche la justice, la piété, la foi, la charité, la persévérance et la douceur. Mène le bon combat, celui de la foi, empare-toi de la vie éternelle ! C’est à elle que tu as été appelé, c’est pour elle que tu as prononcé ta belle profession de foi devant de nombreux témoins.

Méditation
Dans ce passage de son Evangile, saint Luc cite trois femmes galiléennes qui ont suivi Jésus : Marie de Magdala, Jeanne, la femme de Kouza, l’intendant d’Hérode, et Susanne. Les deux premières apparaissent aussi dans le récit de la passion. La scène donne une image de l’Église naissante. Elle est en mouvement et se compose de femmes et d’hommes ordinaires qui sont centrés sur Jésus. Cela signifie qu’ils ont dû renoncer à leur mode de vie habituel. Ils apportaient avec eux «la bonne nouvelle du royaume de Dieu», non seulement par la parole, mais aussi en formant une communauté soudée dans laquelle chacun partageait les ressources dont il disposait. Nous voyons comment des personnes de condition modeste ont soutenu la mission du Seigneur ; Jésus et la communauté chrétienne dépendaient de la générosité des gens pour leur survie et leur mission. De quelles manières est-ce que je soutiens la mission de l’Église aujourd’hui ?

SAINT Maurice and the Theban Legion
Maurice was a native of Egypt. He was conscripted into the Roman army. The emperor ordered his soldiers to offer sacrifice to the Roman gods but the Theban Legion, headed by Maurice, refused. Their allegiance to Christ earned them the crown of martyrdom in the year 287.

First reading: 1 Timothy 6:2-12
This is what you are to teach the brothers to believe and persuade them to do. Anyone who teaches anything different, and does not keep to the sound teaching which is that of our Lord Jesus Christ, the doctrine which is in accordance with true religion, is simply ignorant and must be full of self-conceit – with a craze for questioning everything and arguing about words. All that can come of this is jealousy, contention, abuse and wicked mistrust of one another; and unending disputes by people who are neither rational nor informed and imagine that religion is a way of making a profit. Religion, of course, does bring large profits, but only to those who are content with what they have. We brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it; but as long as we have food and clothing, let us be content with that. People who long to be rich are a prey to temptation; they get trapped into all sorts of foolish and dangerous ambitions which eventually plunge them into ruin and destruction. ‘The love of money is the root of all evils’ and there are some who, pursuing it, have wandered away from the faith, and so given their souls any number of fatal wounds. But, as a man dedicated to God, you must avoid all that. You must aim to be saintly and religious, filled with faith and love, patient and gentle. Fight the good fight of the faith and win for yourself the eternal life to which you were called when you made your profession and spoke up for the truth in front of many witnesses.

Meditation
Pray for the grace to understand your mission of proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom of God. Jesus understood that he had to carry his mission with others, never on his own. Those he chose form quite an unlikely group for the task. So what could be his message through this choice? This passage illustrates the role of the women who followed Jesus, and how people who had the means came to support the Lord’s mission; Jesus and the Christian community depended on the generosity of the people to sustain their mission. In what ways do I support the mission of the Church? The generous women who cared for Jesus are usually out of sight – like so many women today who offer their services for the good of others. Note that Jesus did not just proclaim the Good News – he himself was the Good News. As I receive the word of God, I pray that I may embody it and proclaim it.

SAINT Matthieu, Apôtre et Evangéliste
Fete
Matthieu, dont le nom juif était Lévi, exerçait une profession qui le faisait tenir par ses coreligionnaires pour un pécheur public : il levait les impôts. C’est à ce ‘’publicain’’ que Jésus fait entendre un appel auquel Matthieu répond avec élan. Devenu l’un des Douze, il recevra comme les autres la mission d’aller enseigner toutes les nations.

1ère lecture : Ep 4, 1-7.11-13
Frères, moi qui suis en prison à cause du Seigneur, je vous exhorte à vous conduire d’une manière digne de votre vocation : ayez beaucoup d’humilité, de douceur et de patience, supportez-vous les uns les autres avec amour ; ayez soin de garder l’unité dans l’Esprit par le lien de la paix. Évangile : Mt 9, 9-13
Jésus sortant de Capharnaüm et vit, en passant, un homme, du nom de Matthieu, assis à son bureau de collecteur d’impôts. Il lui dit : « Suis-moi. » L’homme se leva et le suivit. Comme Jésus était à table à la maison, voici que beaucoup de publicains (c’est-à-dire des collecteurs d’impôts) et beaucoup de pécheurs vinrent prendre place avec lui et ses disciples. Voyant cela, les pharisiens disaient à ses disciples : « Pourquoi votre maître mange-t-il avec les publicains et les pécheurs ? » Jésus, qui avait entendu, déclara : « Ce ne sont pas les gens bien portants qui ont besoin du médecin, mais les malades. Allez apprendre ce que signifie : Je veux la miséricorde, non le sacrifice. En effet, je ne suis pas venu appeler des justes, mais des pécheurs. »

Méditation
Matthieu était à l’origine connu sous le nom de Lévi, un collecteur d’impôts qui a répondu à l’appel du Seigneur et a tout laissé derrière lui pour le suivre. C’est ainsi qu’il deviendra un fidèle disciple du Seigneur et un grand évangélisateur par la parole et par ses écrits. L’histoire de saint Matthieu nous rappelle que la miséricorde et l’amour de Dieu est pour tous, et qu’il n’existe pas de péché qui ne puisse être pardonné par Dieu. Saint Augustin d’Hippone déclare : « Il n’y a pas de saint sans passé, pas de pécheur sans avenir », ce qui signifie que nous sommes tous, et avant tout, des pécheurs devant Dieu, mais que la miséricorde de Dieu nous débarrasse de ces péchés si nous répondons à son appel au repentir. La puissance d’amour et de pardon de Dieu est si grande et merveilleuse. Il a appelé et transformé des pécheurs en de grands saints, qui ont eu un impact sur la vie de nombreux fidèles. Nous partagerons tous la même joie, à condition d’être fidèles et d’embrasser la miséricorde de Dieu, en nous repentant sincèrement de nos péchés et de nos égarements passés.

SAINTS ANDRE KIM ET SES COMPAGNONS
MARTYRS
Religieux de la chartreuse de Londres, il refusa de reconnaître Henri VIII comme seul chef spirituel de l’Eglise d’Angleterre. En 1537, il fut condamné, avec huit autres moines, chartreux comme lui, à l’exécution la plus longue : être trainé sur une claie à travers la ville, de la prison à la potence à moitié étranglé mais respirant encore pour être à nouveau traîné sur une claie de la potence au billot. Enfin, avoir la tête tranchée et être équarri comme un bœuf à l’abattoir.

Méditation
Dans l’Evangile de ce jour, Jésus compare la génération de son temps à des enfants capricieux, pervers et difficiles à satisfaire. En effet, les juifs trouvaient toujours des arguments pour rejeter ou s’opposer aux messagers que Dieu leur envoyait. C’est ainsi qu’ils ont qualifié Jean le Baptiste de « possédé », alors qu’il menait une vie solitaire, ascétique et pleine d’abnégation. Leur conduite ne se répète-t-elle pas aujourd’hui parmi les chrétiens ? Ceux qui s’efforcent de servir le Christ fidèlement et de marcher dans la crainte de Dieu sont-ils acceptés par leurs voisins, leurs parents, leurs collègues ou leurs camarades? Quelle que soit la sainteté et la constance de leur vie, ils sont toujours mal vus. Un tel traitement n’est que trop fréquent. Les serviteurs de Dieu de tous les temps, quoi qu’ils fassent, sont blâmés. La vérité est que l’esprit charnel s’oppose à l’esprit de Dieu. Il n’aime pas sa loi, son Evangile et son peuple. Il trouvera toujours une excuse pour ne pas croire et ne pas obéir. Nous devons renoncer à la vaine idée d’essayer de plaire à tout le monde.

SAINT Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang, and companions
17th century Korea fought to stop Christianity by executions. Andrew Kim Taegon, the first Korean priest, who secretly trained in Macao, was executed in 1846. A lay apostle, St Paul Chong Hasang, and many others perished at the same time.

First reading: 1 Timothy 3:14-16
At the moment of writing to you, I am hoping that I may be with you soon; but in case I should be delayed, I wanted you to know how people ought to behave in God’s family – that is, in the Church of the living God, which upholds the truth and keeps it safe. Without any doubt, the mystery of our religion is very deep indeed: He was made visible in the flesh, attested by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed to the pagans, believed in by the world, taken up in glory.

Meditation
It can be very easy to find excuses in a given situation, to remain sitting on the fence – finding fault about all the available alternatives, without getting involved. Children complain to one another when the rules of the game are not observed. Jesus sees that adults too can have simplistic expectations and readily make superficial comparisons. He asks us to see beyond the surface, to reflect more fully, to let our prayer go deeper. If we are able to give time and attention to noticing where God is moving in our midst, we may be able to receive God’s gift of wisdom and insight. God wants us to rejoice in the good things of life. We should celebrate friendship, marriage and family, births, achievements and games. But there is also another side to life. We are to follow Jesus in the breaking of Bread, and in the drinking of the cup of his Passion. I am reluctant, Lord, to take up my Cross daily. I shun pain, hurt and loss. Teach me to find you in suffering. Passion of Christ, comfort me!

Saint Janvier, évêque et martyrCe patron de Naples est célèbre en raison du prodige de son sang qui se liquéfie le jour de sa fête (phénomène attesté depuis 1389). D’après la tradition, Janvier serait un évêque de Bénévent, martyrisé au début du 4e siècle à Pouzzoles.

Dieu créateur et maître de toutes choses, regarde-nous. Et pour que nous ressentions l’effet de ton amour, accorde-nous de te servir avec un cœur sans partage. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : 1Tm 3, 1-13
Voici une parole digne de foi : si quelqu’un aspire à la responsabilité d’une communauté, c’est une belle tâche qu’il désire. Le responsable doit être irréprochable, époux d’une seule femme, un homme sobre, raisonnable, équilibré, accueillant, capable d’enseigner, ni buveur ni brutal mais bienveillant, ni querelleur ni cupide. Il faut qu’il dirige bien les gens de sa propre maison, qu’il obtienne de ses enfants l’obéissance et se fasse respecter. Car si quelqu’un ne sait pas diriger sa propre maison, comment pourrait-il prendre en charge une Église de Dieu ? Il ne doit pas être un nouveau converti ; sinon, aveuglé par l’orgueil, il pourrait tomber sous la même condamnation que le diable. Il faut aussi que les gens du dehors portent sur lui un bon témoignage, pour qu’il échappe au mépris des hommes et au piège du diable. Les diacres, eux aussi, doivent être dignes de respect, n’avoir qu’une parole, ne pas s’adonner à la boisson, refuser les profits malhonnêtes, garder le mystère de la foi dans une conscience pure. On les mettra d’abord à l’épreuve ; ensuite, s’il n’y a rien à leur reprocher, ils serviront comme diacres. Les femmes, elles aussi, doivent être dignes de respect, ne pas être médisantes, mais sobres et fidèles en tout. Que le diacre soit l’époux d’une seule femme, qu’il mène bien ses enfants et sa propre famille. Les diacres qui remplissent bien leur ministère obtiennent ainsi une position estimable et beaucoup d’assurance grâce à leur foi au Christ Jésus.

Évangile : Lc 7, 11-17
En ce temps-là, Jésus se rendit dans une ville appelée Naïm. Ses disciples faisaient route avec lui, ainsi qu’une grande foule. Il arriva près de la porte de la ville au moment où l’on emportait un mort pour l’enterrer; c’était un fils unique, et sa mère était veuve. Une foule importante de la ville accompagnait cette femme. Voyant celle-ci, le Seigneur fut saisi de compassion pour elle et lui dit: « Ne pleure pas. » Il s’approcha et toucha le cercueil ; es porteurs s’arrêtèrent, et Jésus dit : « Jeune homme, je te l’ordonne, lève-toi. » Alors le mort se redressa et se mit à parler. Et Jésus le rendit à sa mère. La crainte s’empara de tous, et ils rendaient gloire à Dieu en disant : « Un grand prophète s’est levé parmi nous, et Dieu a visité son peuple. » Et cette parole sur Jésus se répandit dans la Judée entière et dans toute la région.

Méditation Dans l’évangile d’aujourd’hui, Jésus ressuscite le fils unique d’une veuve. Comme les récits de résurrection de Lazare (Jn 11) et la fille de Jaïre (Mt 9,18ss), ce miracle est aussi un signe qui annonce la résurrection de Jésus, Seigneur de la vie. Jésus montre ainsi sa compassion à, l’endroit de ceux qui souffrent. Il soulage leur souffrance par ses paroles, ses gestes et ses miracles ! La réaction du peuple face au prodige est juste : «Un grand prophète s’est levé parmi nous : Dieu a visité son peuple». Le Ressuscité continue cette mission dans et par l’Église au moyen des sacrements qui communiquent en nous la vie divine. Le sacrement de la Réconciliation, n’est-il pas l’application actuelle de la parole de Jésus : « jeune homme, je te le dis, lève-toi « ? La scène d’aujourd’hui nous invite aussi à agir comme le Christ l’a fait, à l’endroit des personnes qui souffrent la solitude, la maladie, le mépris, le rejet, les malheurs de toutes sortes. A travers nous, Dieu voudrait continuer à visiter son peuple.

According tradition, he was a bishop of Benevento who was martyred at Puteoli in the early fourth century. His body lies in Naples, where his cult is taken very seriously indeed.

First reading: 1 Timothy 3:1-13
Here is a saying that you can rely on: To want to be a presiding elder is to want to do a noble work. That is why the president must have an impeccable character. He must not have been married more than once, and he must be temperate, discreet and courteous, hospitable and a good teacher; not a heavy drinker, nor hot-tempered, but kind and peaceable. He must not be a lover of money. He must be a man who manages his own family well and brings his children up to obey him and be well-behaved: how can any man who does not understand how to manage his own family have responsibility for the church of God? He should not be a new convert, in case pride might turn his head and then he might be condemned as the devil was condemned. It is also necessary that people outside the Church should speak well of him, so that he never gets a bad reputation and falls into the devil’s trap. In the same way, deacons must be respectable men whose word can be trusted, moderate in the amount of wine they drink and with no squalid greed for money. They must be conscientious believers in the mystery of the faith. They are to be examined first, and only admitted to serve as deacons if there is nothing against them. In the same way, the women must be respectable, not gossips but sober and quite reliable. Deacons must not have been married more than once, and must be men who manage their children and families well. Those of them who carry out their duties well as deacons will earn a high standing for themselves and be rewarded with great assurance in their work for the faith in Christ Jesus.

Gospel: Luke 7:11-17
Jesus went to a town called Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a great number of people. When he was near the gate of the town it happened that a dead man was being carried out for burial, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a considerable number of the townspeople were with her. When the Lord saw her he felt sorry for her. “Do not cry”, he said. Then he went up and put his hand on the bier and the bearers stood still, and he said, “Young man, I tell you to get up.” And the dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Everyone was filled with awe and praised God saying, “A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people.” And this opinion of him spread throughout Judaea and all over the countryside.

Meditation
The compassion that fills our hearts at the death of a young person was also in Jesus’ heart for a widow. He wanted to reach out to her and make her feel better. The raising up of her young son is a symbol of how Jesus raises us when we are down. The compassion of his heart makes us know that we are understood, accepted and welcomed in the loving heart of God. In times of darkness, let us remember that Jesus the great prophet is still with us – yesterday, today and for ever. Compassion is Jesus’ instant response to suffering. He comes to heal, to liberate, and to restore to life. Like the widow, Jesus looks at you with compassion today. Take time to acknowledge who or what you mourn, to let Jesus behold you, and to receive his blessing of hope. Pray for all who feel alone, abandoned or bereaved. May they find hope in the presence and prayer of other people.

1ère lecture : Timothée 2, 1-8
Bien-aimé, j’encourage, avant tout, à faire des demandes, des prières, des intercessions et des actions de grâce pour tous les hommes, pour les chefs d’État et tous ceux qui exercent l’autorité, afin que nous puissions mener notre vie dans la tranquillité et le calme, en toute piété et dignité. Cette prière est bonne et agréable à Dieu notre Sauveur, car il veut que tous les hommes soient sauvés et parviennent à la pleine connaissance de la vérité. En effet, il n’y a qu’un seul Dieu, il n’y a aussi qu’un seul médiateur entre Dieu et les hommes : un homme, le Christ Jésus, qui s’est donné lui-même en rançon pour tous. Aux temps fixés, il a rendu ce témoignage, pour lequel j’ai reçu la charge de messager et d’apôtre– je dis vrai, je ne mens pas –moi qui enseigne aux nations la foi et la vérité. Je voudrais donc qu’en tout lieu les hommes prient en élevant les mains, saintement, sans colère ni dispute.

En ce temps-là, lorsque Jésus eut achevé de faire entendre au peuple toutes ses paroles, il entra dans Capharnaüm. Il y avait un centurion dont un esclave était malade et sur le point de mourir; or le centurion tenait beaucoup à lui. Ayant entendu parler de Jésus, il lui envoya des notables juifs pour lui demander de venir sauver son esclave. Arrivés près de Jésus, ceux-ci le suppliaient instamment: « Il mérite que tu lui accordes cela. Il aime notre nation: c’est lui qui nous a construit la synagogue. » Jésus était en route avec eux, et déjà il n’était plus loin de la maison, quand le centurion envoya des amis lui dire : « Seigneur, ne prends pas cette peine, car je ne suis pas digne que tu entres sous mon toit. C’est pourquoi je ne me suis pas autorisé, moi-même, à venir te trouver. Mais dis une parole, et que mon serviteur soit guéri ! Moi, je suis quelqu’un de subordonné à une autorité, mais j’ai des soldats sous mes ordres ; à l’un, je dis : “Va”, et il va ; à un autre : “Viens”, et il vient ; et à mon esclave : “Fais ceci”, et il le fait. » Entendant cela, Jésus fut en admiration devant lui. Il se retourna et dit à la foule qui le suivait : « Je vous le déclare, même en Israël, je n’ai pas trouvé une telle foi ! » Revenus à la maison, les envoyés trouvèrent l’esclave en bonne santé. Méditation
Le centurion demande à Jésus de guérir son esclave ; ensuite il envoie ses amis empêcher Jésus de venir chez lui. Jésus ne peut cacher son émerveillement devant la foi du centurion : « Je vous le dis, même en Israël, je n’ai pas trouvé une telle foi ». Ceux que nous pensons être nos ennemis peuvent aussi avoir la foi et Dieu peut les utiliser pour nous enseigner la vraie foi. En fin de compte, cette histoire rappelle l’enseignement de Jésus dans Luc 6:27 : «Aimez vos ennemis, faites du bien à ceux qui vous haïssent.» Une autre application concrète de cet enseignement est la prière pour nos dirigeants, ceux-là même que nous accusons souvent d’être à l’origine de tous nos maux, comme le recommande saint Paul dans la première lecture de ce jour.

Resentment and anger, these are foul things, and both are found with the sinner. He who exacts vengeance will experience the vengeance of the Lord, who keeps strict account of sin. Forgive your neighbour the hurt he does you, and when you pray, your sins will be forgiven. If a man nurses anger against another, can he then demand compassion from the Lord? Showing no pity for a man like himself, can he then plead for his own sins? Mere creature of flesh, he cherishes resentment; who will forgive him his sins? Remember the last things, and stop hating, remember dissolution and death, and live by the commandments. Remember the commandments, and do not bear your neighbour ill-will; remember the covenant of the Most High, and overlook the offence.

Peter went up to Jesus and said, “Lord, how often must I forgive my brother if he wrongs me? As often as seven times?” Jesus answered, “Not seven, I tell you, but seventy-seven times. “And so the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who decided to settle his accounts with his servants. When the reckoning began, they brought him a man who owed ten thousand talents; but he had no means of paying, so his master gave orders that he should be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, to meet the debt. At this, the servant threw himself down at his master’s feet. “Give me time,” he said, “and I will pay the whole sum.” And the servant’s master felt so sorry for him that he let him go and cancelled the debt. Now as this servant went out, he happened to meet a fellow servant who owed him one hundred denarii; and he seized him by the throat and began to throttle him. “Pay what you owe me”, he said. His fellow servant fell at his feet and implored him, saying, “Give me time and I will pay you.” But the other would not agree; on the contrary, he had him thrown into prison till he should pay the debt. His fellow servants were deeply distressed when they saw what had happened, and they went to their master and reported the whole affair to him. Then the master sent for him. “You wicked servant,” he said. “I cancelled all that debt of yours when you appealed to me. Were you not bound, then, to have pity on your fellow servant just as I had pity on you?” And in his anger the master handed him over to the torturers till he should pay all his debt. And that is how my heavenly Father will deal with you unless you each forgive your brother from your heart.”

Meditation
Forgiveness is something very creative and goes beyond the existing facts. It recognizes the deeper goodness in people, despite what they have done. Forgiveness means pardoning and letting go completely, creating and making the offender new again. It requires great grace to forgive. Forgiveness is never easy. It is a grace from God. Surely, to forgive one’s brother or sister up to seven times is pretty generous! After all, there has to be a limit, at least so Peter thought! Not so, according to Jesus: seventy-seven times. No limit, endless and on-going. Peter must have been shocked to know that the path of forgiveness knows no end. But later he is glad, because Jesus forgives him even after his treacherous denial of the Master. He saw that if God never stops forgiving him, he must try to forgive others. This is how much the Lord loves you. “I forgave you all that debt…” (Matthew 18:32). Thank you Lord for forgiving me seventy-seven times and more. Give me the grace to forgive someone today. Only those who forgive belong to God’s kingdom. Lord, to forgive from the heart is a grace I must pray for. I can’t do it on my own, and I know this. Often, I am a wicked servant! You are always so good to me, but I can be so hard-hearted with those who offend me. Have mercy on me and change my heart!
