Saint Catherine Laboure
Green
St. Catherine Laboure, virgin, was born on May 2, 1806. At an early age she entered the community of the Daughters of Charity in France. Three times in 1830 the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine Laboure, who then was a twenty-four-year-old novice. She died in 1876.

Meditation
Jesus makes predictions about the world’s end and Jerusalem’s destruction. We are terrified by these prophecies, and the idea of the world’s end also makes us consider our mortality. We frequently avoid thinking about this out of fear. Jesus warns the people not to fall for deception because individuals will come telling them things, and there will be indications and symptoms when they are asked when such destruction will occur. Following Jesus’ teaching and example, it is crucial to make an effort to balance one’s relationships with God and one’s neighbours. When this equilibrium is achieved and maintained, we no longer need to worry about when the end will occur since we are prepared for whether it will occur today or tomorrow. As Christians, we are responsible for paying attention to the voice of Jesus when He instructs us in these words: “When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand.”.

Méditation
Jésus voulait que ses disciples retiennent deux leçons. La première était que Jérusalem serait mise à sac par les Romains comme elle l’avait été par les Babyloniens un demi-millénaire avant. Ces jours seraient terribles et ils devraient être prêts à fuir les dangers. La seconde leçon était comme la première, un avertissement, mais cette fois celui d’une fin cosmique. Toutefois, la fin du monde serait aussi un jour dans lequel la création de Dieu atteindrait son plein épanouissement et Jésus lui-même reviendrait pour placer tout l’univers dans l’amour de son Père. Et lorsque toutes choses lui auront été soumises, alors le Fils lui-même se soumettra à celui qui lui a tout soumis afin que Dieu soit tout en tous (1Corinthiens 15.28). Notre foi exige donc un commencement dans la création et un jugement final lorsque Dieu viendra à la fin des temps.

Saint Ferga (c.700 – 784)

He is also known as Vergilius of Salzburg. He was born of a noble family and educated in the monastery at Iona. In 745 he left Ireland on pilgrimage. He became Abbot of St Peter’s at Salzburg. He engaged in controversy with St Boniface, but on Boniface’s martyrdom he became his successor as Bishop of Salzburg in 767.

Meditation
Discipleship entails paying a cost. The disciple is not greater than the master. If Jesus was persecuted by men of his time, the disciple cannot expect a fairer treatment. Persecutions and trials are however opportunities to test our fidelity in Jesus, opportunities to bear witness for Jesus. In the Acts of the Apostles we see how the early Christians were harassed and killed, but these persecutions and the blood of the martyrs became the seed that grew the faith. The early church thrived despite the intense persecution. Jesus tells us that in these persecutions, Christians will be betrayed even by members of their families. .Jesus assures us of the Father’s providential care in the midst of persecutions – not a hair of our head will perish. The key to victory over persecution is perseverance. We must stand firm, fight the good fight and run the race to the end.

Méditation Ce passage de l’évangile expose une des questions fondamentales de la vie : le salut, les persécutions, la fin des temps. Quand tout cela surviendra-t-il ? Ces interrogations, toujours présentes aujourd’hui, sont l’expression de notre désarroi face à la vie. Aussi, désirons-nous connaître, découvrir le sens de notre passé et de notre avenir. C’est de cette manière que nous nous efforçons de surmonter notre désespoir, notre peur face à cette fin des temps, face à toutes les souffrances qui sont énumérées dans ce passage. Mais, bien souvent, notre foi en la puissance de Dieu chancelle. Or, tous les tourments, toutes les persécutions endurées pour la gloire de Dieu ne sont-ils pas autant d’occasions pour nous de témoigner de la puissance du Rédempteur et de l’amour de Dieu ? Il nous est rappelé qu’il est important de persévérer et de rester enraciné dans la vérité de Jésus Christ.

Saint Leonard of Porto Maurizio (1676 – 1751)

Leonard was born in Porto Maurizio in 1676. He joined the Franciscan order and for forty-seven years preached, wrote letters and sermons, and travelled the whole length of Italy. The popularity of the Stations of the Cross is much due to the impetus he gave to the devotion. He died at Rome in 1751.

Meditation
Every generation thinks they are living through the end times because of escalating violence, terrorism, religious persecution, natural disasters and wars among nations. Some fundamentalists and doomsday prophets have stirred up end-time panic attacks on Christians by reading the signs of the times in the light of the great tribulation that will precede the end of the world. Catastrophic events do not allow us to predict how soon the end will come because such events have happened throughout history. Jesus’ point in today’s Gospel is that no one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven…(Matt 24:36). Therefore, don’t be misled by false messianic figures and false preachers who try to hit the panic button by claiming that the end is here. Jesus wants his disciples to be spiritually ready and to keep watch because no one knows the day or the hour.

Puis un autre ange sortit du Sanctuaire qui est dans le ciel ; il avait, lui aussi, une faucille aiguisée. Un autre ange encore sortit, venant de l’autel ; il avait pouvoir sur le feu. Il interpella d’une voix forte celui qui avait la faucille aiguisée : « Lance ta faucille aiguisée, et vendange les grappes de la vigne sur la terre, car les raisins sont mûrs. » L’ange, alors, jeta la faucille sur la terre, il vendangea la vigne de la terre et jeta la vendange dans la cuve immense de la fureur de Dieu.

Et quel sera le signe que cela est sur le point d’arriver ? » Jésus répondit: « Prenez garde de ne pas vous laisser égarer, car beaucoup viendront sous mon nom, et diront : “C’est moi”, ou encore: “Le moment est tout proche.” Ne marchez pas derrière eux ! Méditation
Dans une même et unique vision, Jésus a prédit la chute de Jérusalem et la fin des temps, tout comme l’avaient fait les prophètes de l’Ancien Testament. Il fait un rapprochement entre les deux événements, trouvant en l’un l’image de l’autre : la chute de Jérusalem et la ruine du temple marquèrent la fin d’un monde ou de la nation juive qui d’ailleurs préfigurait la fin du monde ou des nations en général. En somme, à l’aide d’images terrifiantes, l’évangile de ce jour vient nous rappeler que nous sommes arrivés au terme de l’année liturgique. C’est l’occasion pour nous de transposer dans notre vie personnelle cette réalité ; notre route s’achemine également vers son terme et son plein accomplissement. Le Seigneur peut venir à chaque instant, nous appeler à vivre dans la plénitude notre vie d’enfant de Dieu, que nous portons en nous depuis le jour de notre Baptême. Il est donc urgent pour chacun de nous, de préparer cet aboutissement en pleine connaissance.

Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Virgin, Martyr (d. 305)

Saint Catherine was very outspoken at the time of the persecutions of Christians. She even protested openly to the emperor Maxentius who had her arrested, tortured on the wheel and decapitated in 305. St Catherine’s courage is a great challenge to all African Christians in their struggle for justice and peace.

First reading : Apocalypse 14:1-5
In my vision I, John, saw Mount Zion, and standing on it a Lamb who had with him a hundred and forty-four thousand people, all with his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. I heard a sound coming out of the sky like the sound of the ocean or the roar of thunder; it seemed to be the sound of harpists playing their harps. There in front of the throne they were singing a new hymn in the presence of the four animals and the elders, a hymn that could only be learnt by the hundred and forty-four thousand who had been redeemed from the world; they follow the Lamb wherever he goes; they have been redeemed from amongst men to be the first-fruits for God and for the Lamb. They never allowed a lie to pass their lips and no fault can be found in them.

Meditation
The widow’s generosity so much touched Jesus because he knew that the corrupt s leaders were the beneficiaries of the temple donations. They were ripping off the widows and orphans. He said, “beware of the scribes who swallow the property of widows” (Lk 20:47). Jesus was in condemnation of a politico-religious system that exploits and impoverishes the poor and vulnerable of the society. From another perspective, Jesus is teaching us that what matters in God’s sight is not the amount we give but the cost to the giver. God looks at the beauty of the heart and the giver’s means and motives. We should be free and generous whenever we give to enhance the cause of the gospel. Nothing is ever too small when we give liberally and cheerfully from our hearts. God, who loves a cheerful giver, sees us and will replenish us.

Dans leur bouche, on n’a pas trouvé de mensonge ; ils sont sans tache.

Car tous ceux-là, pour faire leur offrande, ont pris sur leur superflu mais elle, elle a pris sur son indigence : elle a mis tout ce qu’elle avait pour vivre. »

Méditation
L’histoire du don de la veuve au Temple est l’un des épisodes les plus réconfortants du Nouveau Testament. Jésus venait de controverser avec des scribes qui non seulement s’enorgueillissaient de leur situation mais en plus étaient parfois malhonnêtes. Comme ils étaient des hommes de la Loi, ils avaient l’occasion d’escroquer les innocents, tels que les veuves. Jésus, tandis qu’il regardait la foule dans le Temple, vit ensuite une pauvre veuve mettre une toute petite offrande ; il saisit alors l’occasion de donner un avertissement à ses disciples. Ce n’était pas une nouveauté, mais c’est une leçon que les disciples et nous-mêmes devons sans cesse apprendre. Moi, le Seigneur, je scrute le cœur, je sonde les reins, pour rendre à chacun selon sa conduite. Dieu ne fait pas acception des personnes et les pièges du pouvoir et de l’argent n’ont aucune influence sur lui. C’est la qualité de la foi, en particulier l’espérance et l’amour dans le cœur, qui amènent ses bénédictions.

Méditation
Pour fêter le Christ, roi de l’univers, l’Église ne nous propose pas le récit d’une théophanie éblouissante. Au contraire, cette scène poignante de la passion selon saint Jean, où Jésus humilié et chargé de chaînes comparaît devant Pilate, tout-puissant représentant d’un Empire tout-puissant. Scène poignante où l’inculpé sans avocat est à deux jours de ressusciter dans la gloire, et où le puissant du moment est à deux doigts de sombrer dans l’oubli. Qui, des deux, est roi ? Lequel des deux peut revendiquer un pouvoir réel ? Pour Jésus, une seule chose compte, c’est la vérité. Toute sa vie, il a servi la vérité, il a rendu témoignage à la vérité. La vérité sur le Père, la vérité sur la vie éternelle, la vérité sur le combat que l’homme a à mener en ce monde, la vérité sur la vie et sur la mort. Autant de domaines essentiels, où le mensonge et l’erreur sont mortels. Voilà ce que c’est qu’être roi de l’univers, c’est entrer dans la vérité et lui rendre témoignage. Tous les disciples de Jésus sont appelés à partager sa royauté, s’ils « écoutent sa voix ». Est vraiment roi celui que la vérité a rendu libre.

Meditation
The Cross of Jesus always carries the inscription INRI, which stands for Iudaeorum, meaning Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews. However, today, we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Jesus is King, not only of the Jews but of all who are and all that is. The kingship of Christ does not depend on armies and armouries but on the power of truth. His kingdom does not belong to the world. He is the King of hearts belonging to people who live in the world. He showed us by example how to make him our King. We recall how he served others by providing food to the multitudes, washing the feet of his apostles, and spending his entire life serving others. We make Christ our King by joining and helping Christ to serve others. Jesus is the King of Truth, King of Integrity, King of Love, Wonderful Counsellor, and King of Peace. As Christians, followers of Jesus, are we people of truth, people of integrity, people of love, and people of peace?
