They are buried at Cyrrhus in Syria, where a basilica was constructed in their honour. In the fifth century their cult spread rapidly through the entire Church.

Meditation
Oh Lord, how many times have I desperately sought to uncover why ‘A’ or ‘T’ mentioned my name after realising I had been implicated in some wrongdoing? How many times have I attempted to preserve my reputation by tarnishing a friend’s good name? I once heard:

Au 4e siècle, Saint Saturnin, l’un des soixante-dix disciples de Jésus, convertit à Pampelune quarante mille personnes en quelques jours dont le jeune Firmin qui, avec l’âge, devint un fidèle prédicateur du Christ. A vingt-sept ans, Firmin reçut le sacre épiscopal, évangélisa l’Aquitaine et les régions voisines. C’est à Amiens qu’il fut arrêté et discrètement assassiné par le gouverneur païen qui craignait les très nombreux chrétiens de la région.

1ère lecture : Agée 1, 1-8
La deuxième année du règne de Darius, le premier jour du sixième mois, la parole du Seigneur fut adressée, par l’intermédiaire d’Aggée, le prophète, à Zorobabel fils de Salathiel, gouverneur de Juda, et à Josué fils de Josédeq, le grand prêtre : Ainsi parle le Seigneur de l’univers : Ces gens-là disent : « Le temps n’est pas encore venu de rebâtir la maison du Seigneur ! » Or, voilà ce que dit le Seigneur par l’intermédiaire d’Aggée, le prophète : Et pour vous, est-ce bien le temps d’être installés dans vos maisons luxueuses, alors que ma Maison est en ruine? Et maintenant, ainsi parle le Seigneur de l’univers : Rendez votre cœur attentif à vos chemins: Vous avez semé beaucoup, mais récolté peu ; vous mangez, mais sans être rassasiés ; vous buvez, mais sans être désaltérés ; vous vous habillez, mais sans vous réchauffer; et le salarié met son salaire dans une bourse trouée. Ainsi parle le Seigneur de l’univers : Rendez votre cœur attentif à vos chemins : Allez dans la montagne, rapportez du bois pour rebâtir la maison de Dieu. Dansez à la louange de son nom, jouez pour lui, tambourins et cithares ! Car le Seigneur aime son peuple, il donne aux humbles l’éclat de la victoire.
3Que les fidèles exultent, glorieux, criant leur joie à l’heure du triomphe. Qu’ils proclament les éloges de Dieu, c’est la fierté de ses fidèles.

Évangile : Lc 9, 7-9
En ce temps-là, Hérode, qui était au pouvoir en Galilée, entendit parler de tout ce qui se passait et il ne savait que penser. En effet, certains disaient que Jean le Baptiste était ressuscité d’entre les morts. D’autres disaient : « C’est le prophète Élie qui est apparu.» D’autres encore : « C’est un prophète d’autrefois qui est ressuscité. » Quant à Hérode, il disait : « Jean, je l’ai fait décapiter. Mais qui est cet homme dont j’entends dire de telles choses ? » Et il cherchait à le voir.

Méditation
Le peuple d’Israël qui retourne à Jérusalem a pour mission de reconstruire le temple de Dieu. Au lieu de cela, chacun va commencer à penser à sa propre sécurité et se construire une maison. Pour se faire bonne conscience, certains diront qu’il n’est pas temps de construire la demeure de Dieu. Agée le prophète appelle le peuple : « Rendez votre cœur attentif à vos chemins : Allez dans la montagne, rapportez du bois pour rebâtir la maison de Dieu. Je prendrai plaisir à y demeurer, et j’y serai glorifié ». Le prophète d’aujourd’hui que nous sommes devront être l’écho de la voix du Christ qui appelle à la conversion des cœurs. Est-ce qu’à nous entendre les gens s’interroge comme Hérode à notre sujet ?

Meditation
Reflecting on Herod’s eagerness to see Jesus prompts me to reconsider the events unfolding around me in the world today. Am I genuinely anxious to recognise Jesus in the midst of accidents, house fires, war victims, or individuals kidnapped and left penniless by thieves? Can I confidently declare that God wants me to take positive actions, no matter how small, in response to any of these events?

Saint Stephanie

Green
Saint Stephanie was martyred at Denderah in Egypt in the fourth century. Stephanie, who was only 18 years old, suffered death together with about 500 Christians who were accused of preferring Christ to the local gods. Their faith and courage are a great challenge for us today.

Meditation
Today’s First Reading serves as a powerful reminder to me of the power of intercession, that is, praying for the needs of others and taking concrete actions to meet those needs. I envision the role of Jesus’ Mother, Mary, at the marriage feast in Cana. I also visualise those four individuals who brought a paralytic to Jesus, lowering him in front of Jesus through the roof of the house. It underscores the possibility of performing acts of kindness for others without harbouring complaints.

Nos fautes sans nombre nous submergent, nos offenses se sont amoncelées jusqu’au ciel. Il leur dit : « Ne prenez rien pour la route, ni bâton, ni sac, ni pain, ni argent ; n’ayez pas chacun une tunique de rechange. Quand vous serez reçus dans une maison, restez-y; c’est de là que vous repartirez. Et si les gens ne vous accueillent pas, sortez de la ville et secouez la poussière de vos pieds : ce sera un témoignage contre eux. » Ils partirent et ils allaient de village en village, annonçant la Bonne Nouvelle et faisant partout des guérisons.

Méditation
Chasser les démons et faire des guérisons au nom de Jésus voici ceux à quoi plus d’un chrétien aspire. Cette aspiration n’est pas mauvaise. Car c’est Jésus lui-même qui donne pouvoir et autorité à ses apôtres sur les démons. Mais il faut prendre l’envoi et les exigences qui l’accompagnent. S’il est vrai qu’il y a des exorcismes qui font du bruit, il est aussi vrai qu’il y a des petits démons que nous devons chasser de notre propre vie et celle de nos communautés. Ce sont les démons de la cupidité, la thésaurisation, du ventre et de la mauvaise gouvernance. Pour vaincre ces démons l’attitude d’Esdras nous est recommandée. La grandeur des tâches qui nous sont confiées, ne dit pas que nous sommes grands que les autres, mais que nous avons beaucoup à donner aux autres.
